1844 – 1925. Enlisted in Browns Regiment which became the 35th by consolidation of the 12th (Browns) Battalion Texas Cavalry and four companies of the 13th (Bate’s) Texas Infantry. No other information.

CMR card for Jan.-Feb. 1864. He enlisted 1 April 1864 for the war at Hernstead by Lt. Heeox. Remarks: Belonging to 24th Cavalry, assigned to this Company temporarily Jan. 25th /64 by order of General Magruder. This unit went thru lots of reorganizatons with one company being assigned to an artillery unit. The 7th Texas Field Battery. The 35th was formed by consolidation of the 12th [Brown's] Battn: Texas Cavalry and four companies of 13th [Bate's Texas Infantry].

Born 1830 in Alabama. Enlisted in the 13th Texas Infantry on 1 June 1862 in Matagorda County. Transferred to the 35th Cavalry in the winter of 1864.

Sam enlisted in the Confederate Army on November 9, 1861 at Brazoria, Texas, agreeing to serve for the duration of the war. His officer of enlistment was A.J. Rugeley. Sam was issued a horse valued at $80 and given $20 worth of equipment. Sam served in various units, primarily Rueben R. Brown's mounted regiment, 35th Texas Cavalry, company G and in the 13th Texas volunteers of Colonel Joseph Bates, 2nd company G & 1st company I (Melton's Squad) of Lt. Elijah G. Melton. Sam maintained the rank of private throughout his service. Company G of the 35th Texas Cavalry was organized May 24, 1862 and nicknamed the "Brazoria Rangers".
