He is buried at Colt State Park in Bristol, RI. A Memorial to Veterans near the Park entrance contains a gravestone with his name on it.

Joseph Doane Crowell was b. 26 June 1822 Chatham MA, the son of Theophilus Crowell and Dorcas Harding. He married Harriet N Stymer 22 Feb 1853 Providence RI. Enlisted 7 Dec 1861 in the E Company, 1st RI Cavalry at 39 years of age. Discharged 3 Aug 1862, Re-enlisted 4 Jan 1864. Transferred on 01 January 1865 from Company E toCompany B (Consolidation) Source: Register of Rhode Island Volunteers 1861-1865.1893. Mustered out at Mustered Out at Baltimore, MD on 03 August 1865. Discharged with a disability pension for cough and respiratory disease. Served at “Camp Mud” in Virginia, notorious for disease conditions. In applying for his disability, one of his witnesses was his brother James A. Crowell, who lived in Medford, MA. His Widow’s person application Aug 16 1886. #343539 Cert 255108. obituary [Providence Journal, July 17, 1873. “In this city on the 16 instant, Mr. Joseph D. Crowell of the 1st Rhode Island Cavalry, n the 53rd year of his age.'

My great-grandfather enlisted in the First RI Cavalry in the fall of 1861, was captured at Middleburg, VA and spent time in Libby Prison and Belle Isle. He was paroled and re-joined his regiment and was mustered out of service in 1865. He died at the Soldier's Home in Bristol, RI in 1827.

My ancestor Nathan enlisted in M Company of the 1st New England Cavalry (Later 1st Rhode Island Cavalry) in Manchester, NH on December 12, 1861. He was mustered in on January 8, 1862. On February 5, 1862 he was furloughed fo illness and was discharged for the same on May 5, 1862. Later that year he enlisted in the 3rd New Hampshire Infantry. Anyone who may have additional info on my ancestor would be most helpful.
