Wounded in action assaulting Marye's Heights in the Second Battle of Fredericksburg. Wounded and captured May 10th, 1864 at Spottsylvania Court House, Va. Held in Andersonville and Florence prisons for seven months. Later served as a witness for the state of Wisconsin into conditions at Andersonville Prison, and on a state commission to investigate placing a Wisconsin monument there. Claimed to have been present for all the regiments battles until the time he was captured, except Gettysburg, due to his wound and in which the unit saw no active fighting.
