John Washington Jefferson - Unknown

Family history indicates that John Washington Jefferson served under Albert Gallitan Jenkins who, prior to the outbreak of the Civil War, served Virginia as a member of Congress. With the outbreak of the Civil War and Virginia's subsequent secession, Jenkins declined running for a third term and resigned from Congress in early 1861. He returned home and raised a company of mounted partisan rangers. By June, his company had enrolled in the Confederate army as a part of the 8th Virginia Cavalry, with Jenkins as its colonel. He spent the early part of 1864 raising and organizing a large cavalry force for service in western Virginia. By May, Jenkins had been appointed Commander of the Department of Western Virginia with his headquarters at Dublin. Hearing that Union Brig. Gen. George Crook had been dispatched from the Kanawha Valley with a large force, Jenkins took the field to contest the Federal arrival. On May 9, 1864, he was severely wounded and captured during the Battle of Cloyd's Mountain. A Union surgeon amputated Jenkins' arm, but he never recovered, dying twelve days later.

GEORGE WASHINGTON BENNETT, was born in Pendleton County, West Virginia, 01/13/1840, a son of Moses and Susan Bennett. George enlisted in Pendleton County, 09/04/1862, along with other family members, in 2nd Company C, 62 Virginia Mounted Infantry. His brother Joseph L. Bennett was KIA at New Market. Enlistment documents describe him as 5',5", hazel eyes, dark complexion and hair, occupation farmer. Pvt. Bennett was slightly wounded during the Battle of Cold Harbor and was sent to Wayside Hospital # 9 in Richmond for treatment of his wounds. On October 29, 1864, George was captured during a Confederate raid on Beverly, Randolph County, by the 8th Ohio Cavalry. He was transferred to Union POW Camp Chase 11/04/1864, where he remained until released by Oath 06/12/1865. George returned to Pendleton County where he died of pneumonia, 12/03/1920 and is buried in Warner Cemetery, Cherry Grove, West Virginia.

JOSEPH L. BENNETT- was born 1841 in the Dry Creek area of Pendleton County, WV. He enlisted in 2nd Company C, Virginia 62nd Mounted Infantry on July 1, 1862 in Pendleton County, Colonel J. D. Imboden commanding. Joseph was a son of Moses and Susannah Bennett. His brother George W. enlisted in the same company the following month. Joseph was present for all Co. C musters until he was killed in action, May 15, 1864 during the Battle of New Market, VA. He is buried in the Confederate soldier section of St. Matthew Lutheran Church Cemetery in New Market.

Levi Waybright - Private

LEVI WAYBRIGHT- was born in Pendleton County, then Virginia, in 1829. He moved to Sutton, Braxton County, WV. where he was employed as a carpenter. In 1854 he married the widow Mary Jane (Evans) Stephenson. The Braxton County 1860 census shows Levi as the father of three Waybright children, three Stephenson step-children and living on a large profitable farm. The 1860 census also shows him as the owner of six slaves. Levi enlisted in the Virginia 62nd Mounted Infantry on August 20, 1862. He was one of the about 40 soldiers from Braxton County who enlisted in Company G of the 62nd Virginia. He likely participated in the 1862 raids against the B&O Railroad. Levi died of Small Pox February 7, 1863 at Camp Washington near Romney, WV. He is likely buried in an unknown grave at what was Camp Washington or at Romney.

Following CSA medical discharge from 31st Virginia he returned to Barbour County and enlisted Co. A, 18th Virginia Cavalry and was appointed 2nd Lt.,September 4, 1862. He then organized 2nd Co. H, 62nd Virginia Mounted Infantry and was elected its' Captain on April 4, 1863. Very likely present with Imboden's independent command on the retreat from Gettysburg and Battle of Williamsport July 6-7, 1863.
Ambushed and killed by Union Home Guard at the Sinks of Gandy, Randolph Co., WV. December 6, 1863, while on detached duty for the 62nd Virginia. Survived by wife Rebecca and two daughters. Buried New Bethel Cemetery, Meadowville, Barbour County. Tombstone inscription reads; 'Captain M.C. Johnson 1836-1863, He Died for His Country'.

Living in a state divided by the Civil War, Sampson chose to buck his friends & relations and joined the Confederacy as a private in Company I, 62nd Infantry Regiment Virginia at the age of seventy-one years old on January 1, 1863.
Being a veteran of the War of 1812, Sampson was no stranger to the military but his age would not permit a lengthy service.
Sampson was a son of Peter Zickafoose & Catherine Hull (Hohl). His paternal grandfather was Johann Ziegenfuss (Zickafoose). His maternal grandparents were Peter Thomas Hull & Susanna Diffenbach.

He and his family left Pendleton Co. in 1872 to move to Jones County, Iowa, where several other family members had settled prior to the Civil War. He is buried in the South Mineral Cemetery in Jones County, Iowa.
