I am trying to find details so I may learn about James Polk Grady to portray him in Civil War reenactments I am soon to be involved with. I believe he was wounded in the battle of New market.

George is my Great Grand Uncle from Hanover Co. Va. George also was in the Hanover and Ashland Artillery.

Family history indicates that John Washington Jefferson served under Albert Gallitan Jenkins who, prior to the outbreak of the Civil War, served Virginia as a member of Congress. With the outbreak of the Civil War and Virginia's subsequent secession, Jenkins declined running for a third term and resigned from Congress in early 1861. He returned home and raised a company of mounted partisan rangers. By June, his company had enrolled in the Confederate army as a part of the 8th Virginia Cavalry, with Jenkins as its colonel. He spent the early part of 1864 raising and organizing a large cavalry force for service in western Virginia. By May, Jenkins had been appointed Commander of the Department of Western Virginia with his headquarters at Dublin. Hearing that Union Brig. Gen. George Crook had been dispatched from the Kanawha Valley with a large force, Jenkins took the field to contest the Federal arrival. On May 9, 1864, he was severely wounded and captured during the Battle of Cloyd's Mountain. A Union surgeon amputated Jenkins' arm, but he never recovered, dying twelve days later.

Henry was wounded at the Battle of Fishers Hill (3rd Battle of Winchester). He was captured on the field and taken prisoner. He had his left leg amputated at the knee and was taken to Fort McHenry.

In Roger U. Delauter, Jr.s book my Great Great Grandfather is listed as Singleton Larkin, his civil war records and family historical records indicate the correct spelling as Singleton Lakin!

GEORGE WASHINGTON BENNETT, was born in Pendleton County, West Virginia, 01/13/1840, a son of Moses and Susan Bennett. George enlisted in Pendleton County, 09/04/1862, along with other family members, in 2nd Company C, 62 Virginia Mounted Infantry. His brother Joseph L. Bennett was KIA at New Market. Enlistment documents describe him as 5',5", hazel eyes, dark complexion and hair, occupation farmer. Pvt. Bennett was slightly wounded during the Battle of Cold Harbor and was sent to Wayside Hospital # 9 in Richmond for treatment of his wounds. On October 29, 1864, George was captured during a Confederate raid on Beverly, Randolph County, by the 8th Ohio Cavalry. He was transferred to Union POW Camp Chase 11/04/1864, where he remained until released by Oath 06/12/1865. George returned to Pendleton County where he died of pneumonia, 12/03/1920 and is buried in Warner Cemetery, Cherry Grove, West Virginia.

JOSEPH L. BENNETT- was born 1841 in the Dry Creek area of Pendleton County, WV. He enlisted in 2nd Company C, Virginia 62nd Mounted Infantry on July 1, 1862 in Pendleton County, Colonel J. D. Imboden commanding. Joseph was a son of Moses and Susannah Bennett. His brother George W. enlisted in the same company the following month. Joseph was present for all Co. C musters until he was killed in action, May 15, 1864 during the Battle of New Market, VA. He is buried in the Confederate soldier section of St. Matthew Lutheran Church Cemetery in New Market.

Hamilton Fink was my husband's 2nd great grandfather
He was born in 1842 in Rockingham County, VA. He enlisted In Pocahontas Co. WV, at age 20 on Aug. 26, 1862 in C. Co. 62nd VA (Imbodens) Mounted Infantry. Wounded four times but never captured, he served until the end of the war. He died in 1929 in Parkersburg, Wood Co., WV.

NATHAN WAYBRIGHT- Born Pendleton County, WV. April 10, 1826, a son of Daniel & Rachel (Arbogast) Waybright.
Enlisted 2/24/1863. Deserted 4/10/1863. No further military record. After the war Nathan married Leah Ketterman and moved to Iowa, then Nebraska. He died in 1904 and is buried in the Forest Lawn Park Cemetery, Omaha, Nebraska.

Enlisted 11 Jan 1864, assigned as a private 1 Nov 1864 Company D 62 Virginia Infantry CSA. disability pension paid to his wife by act of 1902

Enlisted 2nd Co. D August 8, 1862 in Highland County, Va. Present as of February 28, 1863. Deserted prior to April 30, 1863. No further record.

Jacob P. Fink was my husband's great great grand uncle. He was born in Barbour Co. VA. in 1845. He enlisted as a private on Jan. 3, 1864 in Augusta Co. VA. He was paroled on May 24, 1865 at Staunton, VA. His brother, Hamilton Fink was also in the 62nd VA. Mounted Infantry, in C Company.

Born 1835. Took Federal oath and posted bond and was released November 1863.

Enlisted August 26, 1862 in Pocahontas Co. WV. Present as of 2/28/1863. Likely present on Imboden's retreat from Gettysburg. AWOL since March 21, 1864.Reported captured by Union Home Guard in Barbour County, March 21, 1864. Post war resident of Barbour County, WV.

(Brother of Jaspar Hoffman, above) Enlisted 8/26/1862, Pocohontas County, WV. Co. E, 62nd Mounted Infantry. Present on rolls thru 12/31/1864. Paroled 5/17/1865 at Staunton, VA. Dark complexion, light hair, dark eyes. Married Christina Ellen Smith 1877 and moved to Marshall County, WV. 1880's.

Born Barbour County 1833, son of Anthony & Martha (Wells, Bennett) Hoffman. Father born Loudoun County, Virginia. Grandson of John & Margaret Hoffman. Grandfather, born NJ, settled Loudoun County, Va. then Barbour County 1797.
Enlisted Co. E, 62nd Virginia Mounted Infantry 8/26/1862. POW 12/7/1862-exchanged. Paroled Staunton, Va. 5/16/1865.
Dark complexion, black eyes, brown hair, 5 ft. tall.

JACOB T HUFFMAN (Hoffman) born about 1841, son of Anthony & Martha Bennett Wells and brother to 3rd Sgt. Jasper M. Huffman, also Co, E. 62nd Virginia. Enlisted as Private, Company E, in Pocohontas County, August 26, 1862. Present on muster rolls through December 21, 1864. On detached duty with Captain Hill in Randolph & Barbour Counties, autumn 1864. Paroled with his brother Jasper, May 17, 1865, at Staunton, Virginia.

Born Barbour County, (West) Virginia 1820, son of Levi & Rebecca. Served as Scout & Mail Carrier across enemy lines. His home served as an irregular CSA Post Office. Paroled at Staunton, Virginia, May 17, 1865. Dark complexion, dark hair, black eyes, 5'5'.

Born Meadowville, Barbour County, 1847, son of William. Enlisted as Pvt. and drummer. Surrendered at Beverly, West Virginia May 11, 1865 and paroled for exchange at Clarksburg, West Virginia May 17, 1865.

Cpl Johnson was born Barbour Co., WV. 1843, the son of Peter & Mary. Enlisted Co. K, 31st Virginia Infantry, May 18, 1861 at Meadowville. Deserted April 19, 1862. Unauthorized re-enlistment in 2nd Co. E, 62nd Virginia Mounted Infantry. Present as of April 30, 1863. Deserted, in Braxton Co., WV. September 17, 1863. Captured and sent to Camp Chase, Ohio November 3, 1863. Later transferred to Rock Island Prison, Illinois on January 17, 1864. Enlisted in U.S. Army for frontier service October 17, 1864. Returned to Barbour Co. post war.

Valentine Black POLING, Co. E, 62nd Virginia Mounted Infantry. He is my Great Great Grandfather on my mother's side. I wished I knew more about him as I am just entering the family history research. His father, William Black Poling, joined the 31st Infantry. I found his records on Fold3.com website.

Captured at Beverly 'recruiting horses' and sent to Camp Chase,Ohio for remainder of war. Took Oath of Allegiance,buried Linn Cemetery, Marion County,WV

Enlisted 2nd Co.E on 9/4/1862 in Pendleton County, WV. AWOL as of 2/28/1863. No further record.

Enlisted Pendleton Co., WV 8/13/1862. Dropped from rolls prior to 2/28/1863 and sent to Richmond due to desertions. Living in Los Angeles, Ca. as of 3/1/1910.

Henry was from Sugar Grove, Pendleton County, VA and enlisted in the 25th Virginia Infantry at Grafton, VA on May 25, 1861. He was captured at the Battle of Rich Mountain and paroled on Jul 17, 1861. He was exchanged in the fall of 1862 and joined F Company of the 62nd VA. He served with the 62nd VA through the end of 1864. He was on detached service in Highland County, VA in Dec 1864 and that's where the record stops. He married my ggggrandmother, Martha Puffinbarger in around 1868. He died in 1919 in Sugar Grove, WV.

Looking for any info about Eli ans his son William H.T. Saunders. Enlisted BraxtonCo.ug.1862, Company G. Eli KIA at New Market,Va. May 15, 1864.

LEVI WAYBRIGHT- was born in Pendleton County, then Virginia, in 1829. He moved to Sutton, Braxton County, WV. where he was employed as a carpenter. In 1854 he married the widow Mary Jane (Evans) Stephenson. The Braxton County 1860 census shows Levi as the father of three Waybright children, three Stephenson step-children and living on a large profitable farm. The 1860 census also shows him as the owner of six slaves. Levi enlisted in the Virginia 62nd Mounted Infantry on August 20, 1862. He was one of the about 40 soldiers from Braxton County who enlisted in Company G of the 62nd Virginia. He likely participated in the 1862 raids against the B&O Railroad. Levi died of Small Pox February 7, 1863 at Camp Washington near Romney, WV. He is likely buried in an unknown grave at what was Camp Washington or at Romney.

Following CSA medical discharge from 31st Virginia he returned to Barbour County and enlisted Co. A, 18th Virginia Cavalry and was appointed 2nd Lt.,September 4, 1862. He then organized 2nd Co. H, 62nd Virginia Mounted Infantry and was elected its' Captain on April 4, 1863. Very likely present with Imboden's independent command on the retreat from Gettysburg and Battle of Williamsport July 6-7, 1863.
Ambushed and killed by Union Home Guard at the Sinks of Gandy, Randolph Co., WV. December 6, 1863, while on detached duty for the 62nd Virginia. Survived by wife Rebecca and two daughters. Buried New Bethel Cemetery, Meadowville, Barbour County. Tombstone inscription reads; 'Captain M.C. Johnson 1836-1863, He Died for His Country'.

Living in a state divided by the Civil War, Sampson chose to buck his friends & relations and joined the Confederacy as a private in Company I, 62nd Infantry Regiment Virginia at the age of seventy-one years old on January 1, 1863.

Being a veteran of the War of 1812, Sampson was no stranger to the military but his age would not permit a lengthy service.

Sampson was a son of Peter Zickafoose & Catherine Hull (Hohl). His paternal grandfather was Johann Ziegenfuss (Zickafoose). His maternal grandparents were Peter Thomas Hull & Susanna Diffenbach.

Pvt John Eye was from Pendleton Co., VA (WV), and he enlisted in the fall of 1862 in Augusta Co., VA. He was captured at Beverly, WV in Oct. of 1864, and was released from Camp Chase prison camp in Columbus, Ohio at the end of the war in June 1865. He and his family left Pendleton Co. in 1872 to move to Jones County, Iowa, where several other family members had settled prior to the Civil War. He is buried in the South Mineral Cemetery in Jones County, Iowa.

From Pendleton County Virginia now West Virginia. Killed in Action at Williamsport.

Jesse, born September,1845 son of George SR. and Mary Ann Jordan Keister, began his military service on February 25th, 1864 in Pendleton County, WV. He enlisted in the 62nd VA INF, 2nd Company K. He died from disease on October 19, 1864, at age 19. His place of death is unknown.

Was POW at Fort Deleware and took oath of allegence April 1865
