Monocacy, Md, July 9, 1864. Middle Department, 8th Army
Corps, and 3rd Division, 6th Army Corps. During the
operations in the Shenandoah Valley, Maj.-Gen. Lewis Wallace
left Frederick on the evening of the 8th and by a night march
took position on the left bank of the Monocacy river. Early
on the morning of the 9th the Confederates moved out from
Frederick City and began the fight in skirmish order, a little
later bringing their artillery into action. The enemy's
cavalry and artillery then moved around to the Federal left
and charged vigorously on the 3rd division of the 6th army
corps, but the attack was repulsed and a countercharge made,
driving the enemy back. A second attack of Confederate
infantry was repulsed, but with heavy loss to both sides.
About 3:30 p.m. the enemy's batteries were brought into
position to enfilade the Federal line and another assaulting
force of four lines of infantry was moved into position. When
Wallace saw the approaching column he ordered a retreat on the
Baltimore pike, where Brig.Gen. E. B. Tyler had been
skirmishing fiercely all day. The retreat was made in good
order, Tyler forming the rear-guard. The Confederates
followed for some distance, but darkness stopped the pursuit.
The Federal loss amounted to 123 killed, 603 wounded and 568
captured or missing. The Confederate loss in killed and
wounded was reported as being 700.

Alexander B. Wilson, along with his father, Jefferson N. and brother Richard joined Co. A., 50th Virginia Inf. on 27 June 1861. He was captured in Floyd Co., Kentucky and was sent to Camp Chase, Ohio on 19 May 1863. He joined the CSA Army at the age of 18. Contact has been lost with Alexander, but he did survive the War.

At age 39 my great grandfather, with two sons, Benjamin and Richard, rode away from home in S.W. Virginia and joined the CSA Army -- Co. A., 50th Virginia Inf., as Pvt's. on 27 June 1861. He survived the War and then moved to Arkansas about 1878.

Richard Wilson, age 14, along with his father, Jefferson N. and brother, Alexander B. enlisted on 27 June 1861 in Co., A, 50th Virginia, Inf. He was captured on 12 May 1864 at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia and sent to the Point Lookout Union Prison in Maryland. He was then transferred to Elmira Prison in N.Y. and then returned to the Point Lookout Prison. He survived and was sent South for exchange. He spent the rest of his life in Floyd Co., Kentucky and is buried in the Wilson cem. at Little Paint, Floyd Co., Kent. beside his second wife -- with NO stone.

Lt. DaVault served from the beginning of the war including the battles of Fort Donelson, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and the Wilderness before being captured defending the 'horsehoe' in battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse on May 12, 1864 and sent to Elmira Prison until he was released in July, 1865.

Pvt. AB Munsey was a native of Dryden, VA in Lee County. Enlisted on Sept 15, 1863 at age 17. Served under Col A.S. Vanderventer and Captain EC Burchett. Was wounded at Battle of the Wilderness on May 5, 1864 and was discharged after amputation of the right arm at the shoulder. Later was elected Sheriff of Lee County.

Enlisted 2 July 1861 in Wythe County, Virginia. To date no date of death has been found. Family history has that he died during the war, but according to the records I have found he was discharged. One theory is that he was killed returning home.

My Great-Uncle

My Great-Uncle. Wounded at Chancellorsville, 5/2/63; captured Cedar Creek 10/19/64; POW until 6/17/65, when released from Ft. Delaware.

My Great-Grandfather, Will Baldwin, and four of his brothers were in this company. He was wounded at Battle of Spotslyvania Courthouse. Right arm was amputated. He went home and raised horses for the CSA. Later farmed and served as Justice of the Peace in Grayson County, VA. Known as Squire Baldwin. He had a big house on White Top Mountain, which burned around the turn of the century. Married to Abigal Roselyn (Rosy) Osborne.

I'm not sure where he fits into my family tree. I need to go look him up. He is either the older brother or the uncle of Noah Blevins. Not sure which. He went AWOL sometime around 8/63 and went home to Grayson County until captured by Union soldiers in 4/64. He was POW. Eventually deserted to the enemy and took oath, along wtih Harrison Blevins, who was probably a cousin or nephew. My genealogy on the Blevins side of my family is not as detailed as the Baldwin and Bailey sides.

May have served in 58th NC Inf., prior to coming over on the Virgina side to join his cousins or nephews in the 50 Virginia Inf. Wounded in action at Chancellorsville, went AWOL to Grayson County. Captured and was POW in Louisville, KY. Took Oath and deserted to the enemy, along wtih Calvin Blevins. Not sure how they were related or how they were related to Noah, who was killed at Chancellorsville, but they were all family.

Captured after injury at Carnifex Ferry 9/10/61. POW until 12/8/62. Part of prisoner exchange abord Charn, near Vicksburg. Killed in action at Chancellorsville 5/2 or 5/3/63. My father's mother's uncle.

Joseph H. Pickle was from Grayson Co., Va - Enlisted June 4, 1861 and became the regimental color bearer (sergeant).

Pickle is mentioned in reports in the Official Records for gallantry at Chancellorsville and was again cited for his actions at Gettysburg in a promotion request letter of 7 Aprill 1864.

He was promoted to Color Ensign/1st Lieutenant on 28 April 1864, but was killed in action 7 days later (5 May 1864) at the battle of the Wilderness.

GGGrandfather and brother and 2 cousins were from Grayson County,Va. Known as the 'Wilson Rifles'.

My maternal uncle (grandfather Jackson Reedy's brother) -5 generations.

I am the great, great, great grandson of Jackson Reedy, Private, 50th Virginia Infantry, Company D, 'The Wilson Rifles' (I have also seen them referred to as, 'The Grayson Hornets'. Jackson and his brothers Christopher and Andrew apparently all served in the 50th, Co. D for the duration of the war. Andrew died in the (Elmyra?) New York POW camp of pnuemonia. Jackson was captured and held POW for the final 5 months of the war in Delaware. After the war he returned to Grayson county, outlived one wife and had at least six children - my great, great grandmother being his eldest daugther. Jackson died February 1st, 1905 (age 77)and is buried in our family's section of the church graveyard at Shippey's Branch. We have at least one picture and a transcript of a letter he wrote to his father during his 4+ years on the 50th's campaign.

James R. Deadmore was an mail agent in 1860, age 26, Washington County Virginia. Enlisted in Abingdon, Washington County Virginia 6/21/1861. On 7/8/1861 was named as an officer in a unit organizing in Wytheville Virginia. He was present in the unit, 7/31/1861, 9/5/1861 and 1/3/1862 when ''Inspecting and Mustering Officer.'' He was present at Dublin Depot 2/1/1862. 1st Lieutenant James R. Deadmore was later promoted to Captain and served with the 63rd Virginia Infantry. Postwar: He was a Town Sergeant for the Town of Abingdon Virginia,1879. He was kin to Sally Deadmore, wife of Napoleon Thurston.

G (1) 50th VA inf reg June 15, 1861 for a period of 3 years by Capt. Dunn at Abington,VA. He was in several Battles in western VA (Kessler Cross Lanes, Carnifex Ferry and the Kanawha Valley campaign. The company was reorganized May 1, 1862 and became Co.I (1) 63rd VA inf reg and saw action in VA, NC, TN, and GA. He was WIA Sept 20, 1863 (right arm shot off) at the battle of Chicamauga, furloughed 60 days and returned to duty Aug 31, 1864. Andrew Jackson Blevins

Private, Company H, 50th Regiment VA Infantry, Floyd's Brigade, enlisted at Wise Courthouse, March 6, 1861, Private, age 22. Sick at the hospital in White Sulphur Springs, WV. September 10, 1861 through November 1, 1861. He was listed as a farm hand, age 21, in the 1860 Wise Co census.

His father, Linkhorn, served in the county militia and his brother, George Washington, served in the Confederate Army.

Just prior to the surrender Andrew J developed pleurisy and due to lack of medical treatment, it ate a hole in his side and he was given a furlough until his health improved. He returned to his home in the Glades of Wise County and the treatment of loved hands and rest from the worries of war worked wonders, and he was soon able to go around again. At that time, Wise county had a bunch of Home Guards and many of the members of the Guard were hiding out to keep from entering the service, and some had deserted and was also using the name of the Guard to cover their stealing and many other crimes. A fellow by the name of Mack Jessee was a member of this guard and he approached Blevins one day and told him that he would have to return to the War. 'No, not in the condition I am in now', Blevins answered. 'Well, then why don't you join the Home Guard with us, then?' he asked. Blevins replied that if he joined anything it would not be a bunch of horse thieves and robbers. However Blevins became alarmed or afraid of the Home Guard and hid out around the Glades, only coming home at night or when a safe chance presented itself. At this time among the Home Guards was two men by the name of John Bickley and _____ Minnifee. It was agreed that they would kill Blevins and in return they were to get a chicken pie for dinner from the Home Guards. Early one Sunday morning after Lee had surrendered and peace had been made, Blevins left his hiding place and went home. Eli Bond, a friend of Blevins' went to the home of Blevins and asked him to go home with him and write a letter for him to a friend in the Confederacy. Bond lived at the site where the Yellow Creek Bridge is East of Wise and when the two friends got to the home and shortly after their letter was begun, the womenfolk called that the Guard were coming. Bond and Blevins hurried out the back and started to run up the old Hurricane Road. In the race Blevins was shot down and the guard passed him up trying to catch Bond, who eventually escaped through the Glades and made his get away. When returning back down the road Minifee tried to make his horse trample Blevins who was still yet alive though mortally wounded. The horse each time would jump over the man and Minifee dismounted and shot the wounded man through the head.

Minifee and Bickley knew they would be apprehended for this crime so they started riding toward Guest Station to make their getaway and while passing this place they killed John Newberry who was attending the funeral of his mother. Sometime later Bickley was passing back through this section and sent a woman ahead to warn him of danger. The authorities got word of this, captured the woman and forced her to tell what time he would be through. He was to pass that night and Lieutenant Cyphers rounded up a bunch of citizens and captured him.

He was taken then on Sunday morning to the spot near Yellow Creek Bridge where Blevins was killed and again the stillness of the Sabbath morning was punctuated by the crack of a rifle and another life passed over. He was buried in the old cemetery opposite the Wise Primitive Baptist Church on the Highway leading south from Wise. Minifee was not captured by the authorities of this county. This story was told to George Blevins of Wise by an old woman who remembered it distinctly and the foregoing was related by George Blevins.

Andrew was born 1839 in Russell County, VA, son of Langhorn and Sarah (Belcher) Blevins. He is probably buried in the Blevins Cemetery, Wise, Wise Co, VA. ~Sharon ROBINSON Peel ]

Christopher Alderson Gibson left home at the age of 16 and joined the Confederate Army. He was twice wounded, captured and taken to a Federal Prison in Chesapeake Bay. He fought under General Stonewall Jackson.
During the war between the States, Chris served with Co H 50th Virginia Infantry. He was a P.O.W. at Point Lookout, Maryland. The camp was at that time called Camp Hoffman. Records indicate he was captured at the Battle Of The Wilderness,
May 17th, 1864 taken to Point Lookout. Chris was transferred to Elmira P.O.W. camp at N.Y. possibly due to overcrowding. Flavius remained at Point Lookout and died there on 8/24/1865. Chris was released from Elmira on 6/14/1865 two months after the war ended. Initially, he refused to sign the oath of allegiance, finally signing it in June 1865. He was released returing to Abingdon, his place of residence. At the time of release he was given $2.10 from a Yankee surgeon whom he had made rings for.
In 1866 he married Rachel Simms Caudill.
On 8/24/1894 he was killed in Lee Co, VA, following a land dispute with Joseph Necessary. Necessary was acquitted on grounds of self defence, but he was also killed following another land dispute some years later.
Chris was buried in the Gibson Cemetery located at Bostic farm, route 600, Scott Co. VA. On his tombstone there is a circled G and an inscription. The inscription reads: Gibson 1845-1892. Rachel S. Gibson 1851-1933. AT REST.

The son of Nicholas Johnson and Nancy Virginia Doahune Horne of Coeburn (Guest Station), Va., Charles enlisted in Company H, Virginia 50th Infantry Regiment on 25 Jul 1862. Mustered out on 12 Oct 1862. (This was a month after his death.)

Charles was killed at the Battle (Skirmish) of Gauley Bridge on 3 September 1861. According to his enrollment papers, he stood 5'11' and had a dark complexion with blue eyes. Charles was married to Margaret Elizabeth Jesse, the daughter of David and Martha Stinson Jesse. After Charles' death, she married Hiram Kilgore, the son of Reverend Charles and Mary Gray Kilgore.

His brothers, Stephen, Samuel, Henry, John, Thomas Harmon, and Jesse were also Confederate soldiers. Their father, Nicholas Johnson drove a supply wagon for the Confederate Army.

Jesse, the son of Nicholas Johnson and Nancy Virginia Donahue Horne, was a member of a group headed by Logan Salyers called The Yankee Catchers. Jesse was a brother to Henry, Samuel, Stephen (64th Mounted),and Thomas Harmon Horne.

The unit commanders were: Logan H.N. Salyer Capt.,Jonas A. Lipps 1st Lt., Lt. Shanklin Salyer 2nd Lt., John R. Davis 3rd Lt.

Jesse was killed during the Battle of the Wilderness. His body was initially buried on the battlefield near Orange Plank Road by his captain, Jonas Lipps. Even though Jonas marked the grave and knew where it was, Lipps was captured before any formal marking (a tombstone)could be done for the gravesite.

Eventually, Jesse's body was removed, along with other fallen Confederate soldiers, to the cemetery in Fredericksburg and buried in a mass grave.

Jesse had, shortly before his death, announced in a letter to the Wise County paper, his intention to be on the ballot of the upcoming election for Wise County as Commissioner of Revenue.

According to an account by Jonas Lipps:
May 5, 1864: Taken up the line of march at day break and engaged the enemy at the Battle of the Wilderness at about 2 o'clock and Gen. Jones was killed and I witnessed his remains appearance.
May 6, 1864: Lay in line of battle and fortified, and skirmished with the enemy, and burried Jesse Horn, and marked his grave.
May 7, 1864: Lay in line of battle in the breast works till about 10 o'clock. Taken the line of march to the extreme left of the general base fighting continually along the line. The dead were burried today. I showed D. P., J. H.'s grave.

Jacob Wade joined Company H, 50th Infantry Regiment Virginia on 15 July 1862 (J. A. Lipps Company). His older brother, John Wade (c1829), enlisted on the same day. According to his military record Jacob was detailed on 14 September 1862 at Gauley Bridge, WV tending ferry & guarding supplies. When John W. Wade was killed at Wilderness, VA (or possibly later at the Battle of Spotsylvania), Jacob was taken prisoner and sent to Elmira, NY where he was eventually released after taking an oath of allegiance on 27 June 1865.

John W. Wade joined Company H, 50th Infantry Regiment Virginia on 15 July 1862 (J. A. Lipps Company) with his younger brother, Jacob Wade (c1842). It is believed John Wade was killed at the Battle of the Wilderness, VA or possibly a little later at the Battle of Spotsylvania. His brother, Jacob, was taken prisoner durring the Battle of the Wilderness and sent to Elmira, NY where he was eventually released (1865).

Brother to Thomas Baker King and Russell Robert King. Chapman King joined the Confederate Army on April 2, 1862. He was a private in the 50th VA Infantry, Company I. He was later in the 8th VA Cavalry and the 5th VA Infantry. He was captured at Lewisburg, West Virginia on May 23, 1962. By May 30, 1862, he was being held at Wheeling, West Virginia before being sent to Camp Chase, Ohio June 30 to August 25, 1862. He was received for exchange near Vicksburg, Mississippi on September 11, 1862 and declared exchanged on November 10, 1862. He was captured again on May 8, 1864 in the Wilderness and held at Point Lookout, Maryland from May 17 to August 10, 1864 when he was transferred to Elmira, NY. On December 16, 1864, Chapman stated his desire to take the Oath of Allegiance, saying he volunteered for the Confederate Army in 1862 to avoid being conscripted and that he also desired to go to Charleston, West Virginia “where he has relatives residing.” Chapman died at Elmira, NY on April 18, 1865 of chronic diarrhea and was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira, NY. Chapman was described in 1864 as 5’ 11” with hazel eyes, dark hair and no whiskers.

Thomas Baker King's brother. Russell joined the Confederate Army April 14, 1862. He was a private with the 50th VA Infantry, Company I. He was on the muster rolls from May 5, 1864 until May 19, 1864, which makes him one of only six men from Company I remaining after the Wilderness – Spotsylvania Court House battles. He was captured at Snicker’s Gap on July 18, 1864. He was sent to Washington, DC as a prisoner of war August 8 – 12, 1864 before being transferred to the prison camp at Elmira, NY. On December 16, 1864, Russell stated his desire to take the Oath of Allegiance, saying he volunteered for the Confederate Army in 1862 to avoid being conscripted. He stated he desired to go to Charleston, WVA “where his relatives reside.” He was paroled on March 14, 1865, exchanged at Boulware’s Wharf on the James River on March 21, 1865 and then hospitalized in Richmond with chronic diarrhea until his death on March 25, 1865.

Enlisted at Dublin, Pulaski County Virginia in ''the spring of 1863.'' Served 2 years. Detailed, ''to gather forage for army'' Postwar farmer. Living to age 63. Died and buried in Pulaski County at ''Mountain View Methodist Church'' located on Wilderness Road.

He was my Great great Grandfather.

Would appreciate any information about Joseph anyone could forward to me. He died probably at Chancellorsville on 12 June 1863. The Quesenberry family's original birthplace/homestead was next door to Stratford Hall ( the Lee plantation, as in Robert E. ). And the first Quesenberry to be born in America, John, lived there ( I think ) back in 1666. John married Anne Pope; the Pope family sold Stratform Hall/plantation to the Lees ( to the best of my knowledge ).

Enlisted in Company I, Virginia 50th Infantry Regiment as a drummer. Joined with his future brother-in-law Amos Gallimore. Captured at Fort Donelson on February 16th, 1862. Transferred to Camp Morton federal prison. Verified by POW muster roll dated June 1862.Released from Camp Morton federal prison as part of prisoner exchange. Officially released back to service in Confederate Army at Aiken's Landing, VA on 10 Nov 1862. Mustered out on 2 Mar 1865.

Spent most of his service at Montgomery White Sulphur Springs hospital, either sick or detailed to duty there in some capacity.
