my great grandfather, born on 2/1/1817, was 44 years old when he joined the company. Lived until 1905 when he was 88 years old. His son, my grandfather build dams on the Ohio River and later owned a rock quarry in Southern Illinois. My grandfather sang ' I am a Rebel soldier' song to me and my brother and sister when we visited him as children in the 1950's and told us his father sang the song to him for years.

He served with Company H, 36th Virginia Infantry listed in Giles County Virginia in the Civil War where he made gunpowder. He is listed in the 1860 Giles County census beside John B. Miller, who was known to make gunpowder, adding credence to the story passed to W.H.C.'s descendants. He is buried in a small family cemetery in Clover Hollow where his gravestone is illegible and sunken in the ground.
