STURMS H. GAINER was born Randolph Co., WV. 1839, a son of George Washington & Phoebe Gainer. George W. was the musician for Company K, 31st Virginia Infantry until his discharge in June 1862. Sturms enlisted at Philippi, WV., May 31, 1861 as a Private in Co. A of the 9th Virginia Infantry Battalion, which was later designated the Virginia 25th Infantry Regiment. He died of disease along Gandy Creek, likely Spring of 1862 and is buried in Osceola Cemetery, Osceola, Randolph County.

regiment records show that he enlisted in Richmond, but was released because he was only 17 (Records show he didn't turn 18 until 1861 or 1862). Family tradition is that he served in artillery. He entered the Confederate Soldiers Home July 31, 1906, died April 8, 1907. Buried at Riverview Cemetery in Richmond.

His younger brother George R Ware, enlisted the same day at the age of 19. Both were the illegitimate son''s of Matilda Ware.
