Company F
Stephen Lafayette Pankey
- 2nd Lieutenant
Enlisted 11 April at Huger Barracks for 3 years. He is present for duty in June and July 1862 near Drewry Bluff on the James River. His name appears on a list of unwounded prisoners taken by the 6th Army Corps at the Battle of Crampton's Pass 14 Sept 1862 and paroled by order of Maj.Gen. Franklin. Promoted to 2nd Lieut. on 3 Sept. He was captured at South Mountain and exchanged, note that 694 prisoners were exchanged at Akins Landing. It is unclear what happened next as his CMR dated 28 Feb. 1863 states He Resigned his commission and dropped from the rolls by order of the Sec. Of. War. 9 Feb. 1863.
* His resignation comes five months after the exchange. This is customary at times of promotion and before discharge. It is likely he we was ill or wounded.
