Joseph was born 27 Sept 1846 in Arkansas. In 1860 his is in Red River Parish, La. which is near the Texas state line. He enlists in Trinity Co. Texas and is mustered on 1 May 1861 in Capt. William L. Kirksey's Co. Mounted Vols in 3rd Regt Sibley's Brigade. This Regiment shows 1000 men in 10 companies. He has 2 cards in his archival file. Assigned to the Dept of Texas. For a short period, it was assigned to the Dept of New Mexico. Battles: Valverde, Glorieta Pass, Battle of Galveston, Red River Campaign, Vermillion, Donaldson, Cox's Plantation, Pleasant Hill and many skirmishes. He married Martha Ann Sockwell. He died 16 April 1906 in Caddo Parish and is buried in the Thomas - Wren Cem. at Shreveport in Caddo Parish. He is the Father-in-Law of my 2nd cousin 3 x removed.

'Lum' was was John Christopher Columbus Barkers nickname and he was my 3rd great uncle. As most of my ancestors did he fought for the confederacy and being from Texas was also cavalry. He fought in the same battles that both my father and mothers participated in. My family have been in East Texas before it became a state and have been in involved all battles facing the republic and the south.

Henry Andrew Jackson Couch - Private |
Henry was born 14 Jan. 1845 in Jackson, Pontotoc, Mississippi. The 1860 census shows him at age 14 in Beat. 6, Cherokee Co. Texas. The P.O. is at Rusk. His parents have to provide a certificate of approval for enlistment. He has 7 cards in his archival file. Enlisting on 15 Sept 1862 at New Salem, Rusk County, Texas for the war by G.A. Gordon. On 20 Nov 1863 he is captured at Camp Platt, Louisiana by a Federal Recon Force. He was exchanged 31 Dec 1863. He fought in the Red Fiver Campaign and when they heard of Lee's surrender they disbanded 27 May 1865 at Wild Cat Bluff, Texas and went home. His wife filed for and received a pension. He died 20 Apr 1921 at Simpsonville, Matagorda Co. Texas and is buried at Kerens Cem. Kerens, Navarro Co. Texas. He was the father-in-Law of my 3 cousin ,3 x removed.
