Gilford was 20 years old when he enlisted on 13 March 1863. He was assigned to Capt. T W Rice's Battery Heavy Artillery Which was later changed to Light Artillery. His archival file has 6 cards. He was in the battle of Brice's Crossroads. His parents were David Thomas and Mary E Taylor. Not much is known about him after this. It is believed he died before Sept. 1870.

Alabama (part of 50th Reg't of Alabama) reorganized 5/1861 (1st) Company A subsequently served as Capt. Rice's Independant Co. TN Light Artillery.
