37th Tennessee Infantry
Company Unknown
Joseph T. McReynolds - Major
Major Joseph T. McReynolds was from Blount Co., TN., his father, Stephen J. McReynolds was also in the 37th Tenn. Inf., enlisting as a Captain, later Major, he was killed at Glasgow, Ky. and his son Joseph was elected Major of the Regiment. At the time of his death during the Battle of Murfreesboro, TN (Yankees call it the Battle of Stones River), he was the Commanding Officer of the 37th Tenn Inf., due to the Colonel White and Lt. Col. Frayser of the Regiment being wounded earlier. Joseph was killed on 31 Dec. 1862, while leading the 37th in a charge across a field. Capt. Jarnagin then took command of the 37th. Later after the battle, General Bragg ordered his name to be engraved on one of the captured Union Army cannons due to his valor and he is listed with those who were to receive the Confederate Medal of Honor. Joseph's body was later taken to Maryville, Blount Co., Tn. for reburial.

Also, I'm trying to locate a picture of Major Joseph T. McReynolds.

Robert Mastin Gann - Private
(gg-Grandfather) Robert Mastin Gann enlisted August 25th, 1861, at Camp Sam Hays with Capt. E. E. Hankins Company of the 1st Tennessee Rifle Regiment. This company subsequently became Company G, 37th Tennessee Infantry. From Dec 28, 1861, until January 12, 1862, he was assigned duty as a teamster with the Quartermaster department by order of Col. Moses White. During July 1862 he was absent for muster due to being sick and sent to hospital, returning to duty in November 1862. On May 10, 1863, he was again sent to the hospital for an unstated illness. A muster card of November 1863 lists him as having deserted November 2nd, 1863. He appears on a roll of prisoners listed as a rebel deserter at Knoxville, TN and was paroled and released at the office of the Union Provost Marshall on February 27th, 1864. He rejoined his unit serving until he again became ill while on duty at Tunnel Hill, Georgia. Released on furlough from the hospital he arrived at home in Madisonville, TN where he died on March 4th, 1865.
