My great-great grandfather. Taken prisoner at Fort Donelson on Feb. 16, 1862. Transported to Camp Butler, Illinois, where he died of disease on May 24, 1862. Left his widow, Ruthy Dias Rankin, with three sons, the youngest having been born two weeks before James was taken prisoner.

Conclusion: He enlisted in Nov 1861 and surrendered at Fort Donalson. He was taken to Camp Butler as a prisoner but escaped.

Morgan commissioned him a Captain and he commanded Harper's Partisan Raiders who fought behind enemy lines throughout the War of Northern Aggression. He and his men derailed many a train on the Louisville & Nashville Line.
