James R Chisam - Private
James Chisam is my Great grandfather. He enlisted in the Confederate Army when he was 20 years old, served with the 13th Calvary Regiment, the 22nd Tennessee Infantry Battalion, and the 38th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry. He was captured in November 1863 at Missionary Ridge, Charleston, TN and taken prisoner, where he was transported to Rock Island Barracks, Ill. In March 1864, he is listed on a muster report with a typed inscription 'who desire to take the oath of allegiance' and hand written 'wishes to go home' in the remarks column.

Amos McGowin - Private
Amos McGowan (Shown in enlistment records as spelled "McGowin"), was my Great Grandfather from White County who enlisted into Company "A" - Oct 1862. I have a number of actual battle accounts passed on to me from my Grandfather, the youngest of Amos's children. Amos was born in 1840, died in 1928 in Caldwell County Ky. and is buried there. Contrary to most records, the 22nd Inf Battalion (Murray's), DID participate in the battle of Murfreesboro (Stones River) as his account tells. He specifically recalled Breckinridge's reinforcement of "600 of the best trained men in the south" arriving. (This would have been the late afternoon of the 2nd of Jan.) He mentioned a vivid account of the brick house (Cowan), where injured, and dying men where yelling out for water. He stopped and spoke to a Union officer that had been shot through and sitting up against a wall, having a silk cord drawn through his wound to slow the bleeding. He stated to Amos, "you daring boys,... you are charging right into the face of the cannons" ,which followed the next day as Breckinridge's Battalion was all but completely destroyed by cannon. I suspect that his regiment had merged into the 8th or 38th Regiment, (Donelson's Brigade), sometime early during this battle as they are later confirmed to have been merged into the 38th Reg. officially.
