James Monroe Lampley
- Private
James Monroe Lampley, my gr-gr-uncle, was born and raised in Dickson TN. Although those of his family who served in the War between the States were in the Confederate ranks, he joined the 7th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry (USA) at age 16 and was captured in February 1864 by Forrest's troops. As they were Tennessee troops, they were not treated well and all of their possessions and extra clothing were taken from them before they arrived at Andersonville Prison in GA. As a result, they had nothing to barter with or cover themselves and the men of this regiment suffered terribly. James Monroe Lampley arrived at Andersonville Prison 26 March 1864 and died 21 July of the same year. He is buried in the Andersonville National Cemetery. (His name is misspelled as James M. Lamphey.) His brother and my gr-grandfather, John Washington Lampley, of Dickson TN and Marshall County KY named a son James Monroe in his honor.

This would be my great-great-grandfather, unless he served elsewhere, or I may have him confused with another Thomas Savage that served in this regiment. Found him on the National Park Service database. Wasn't entirely sure which side he served with or the history behind it. Would love to see documents relating to him.
