Jesse Richard Heifner

Jesse R. Heifner enlisted in Company B, 29th Tennessee Infantry on July, 1861. He was 16 years old. He served under Capt. M. H. Hancock and Col. Sam Powell until July, 1862 when he was discharged for being under age. 18 was the age requirement. Later that same year, still only 17 years of age, he enlisted in Company E of the 5th Tennessee Calvary Regiment (McKenzie's). He served with the 5th Tennessee Calvary until the end of the war. He was paroled at Charlotte, North Carolina.

While serving with the 5th Tennessee Calvary, that unit was involved in skirmishes in Kentucky, the battles of Chickamauga, McMinnville,Shelbyville and Philadelphia. It later was involved in conflicts in Kentucky, Alabama and Georgia. It then took part in the Campaign of the Carolinas. The regiment surrendered with the Army of Tennessee. The 5th's commanders were Col. George W. McKenzie, Col. John B. McLin, Lt. Col. John G. M. Montgomery and Maj. John L. Blackwell.

Jesse survived the war without being seriously wounded. He applied for a pension on November 13, 1906 at the age of 61. His pension application states that he was living in Charleston, Bradley County, Tennessee.

Two affidavits accompany the application.

Affidavit #1 is by John H. O'Neal of Murray County, Georgia. Mister O'Neal states 'I served with the applicant from September 1,1861 to about July, 1862, in Company B, 29th Tennessee Infantry at which time he was discharged being under age.'

Affidavit #2 is by A. H. Matlock of Polk County, Tennessee. Mr. Matlock states 'I am personally acquainted with the applicant and that he served from sometime in 1862 until the end of the war in the 5th Tennessee Calvary, Co. E.'

His pension application #S8557 was approved. After his death his widow, Malinda, received widow's pension #6815.

Joel was born 1 April 1843 in Tenn. He is on the census there in 1860 at age 17 living in District 6, Hancock County. The Post Office is at Sneedville. He has 6 cards in his archival file. He enlists at Sneedville on 17 Dec. 1862. The 5th is deeply involved in the Tullahoma Campaign in Central Tenn. where he is in the fight at Chickamauga, Minnville, Shelbyville and Philadelphia. The 5th was engaged in battle and skirmishes in Kentucky, Alabama and Georgia. His last CMR is at Tunnell Hill Ga. where it is noted that he is missing. Circumstances unknown. The 5th went on to fight in the Carolina Campaign, its last fight being on 11 Feb at Aiken South Carolina. Surrendered under command of Army of Tennesse. Assignments: Warton's, Pegram, JS Scott, Davidson's, Hume's & H.M. Ashby's Brigades. The roster of the 5th contained the names of 2189 men. Joel survived the war and died 14 May 1881 at Sugar Creek, Berry County, Missouri. He is buried n the Fawver Cem in that county. He is in my family tree on a remote limb.

In August 13th 1861 My Great Great Grandfather Sylvester Walker enlisted for 1 yr at Camp Powell, in Henderson, Tennessee 4th Corporal in Co. D 29th Regiment , Tennessee Infantry , Confederate States Army

He was transferred to Co.G, 5th Regiment (McKenzie's) Tennessee Calvary CSA. at Rank of Private.

Jan-Feb 1863 Had his Bounty; Mounted 102 days; absent 5 days.

March-April 1863 Paid to Feb. 28,1863 Had 1 Horse.

July 1st 1863 he was appointed to 1st Sergeant. Co. G 5th Tennessee Calvary CSA.

On Oct 8 1863 he was captured near Richmond, Tennessee.

On Oct 13 1863 His name appears on a Roll of prisoners of war at Nashville Tenn. Endorsement on Rolls show: 'Roll of prisoners of war at Nashville forwarded for exchange Oct 14th 1863' HD. QRS. Prov. Mar. Gen'l, Department of the Cumb'd, Nashville, Tenn.

Oct. 14,1863 His name appears on a register of prisoners of war Forwarded to Louisville, Kentucky for exchange .

Oct. 15,1863 His name appears on a Roll of prisoners of war Received at Louisville, Kentucky ,Military Prison.

Discharged to Camp Morton, Indianapolis, Indiana. His name appears on a Roll of prisoners of war Forwarded from Louisville Military Prison to Camp Morton, Ind. Roll dated Headquarters district Kentucky, Louisville, Oct. 15,1863.

Oct. 16,1863 His name appears on a Roll of prisoners of war Received at Camp Morton, Indianapolis, Indiana.

March 15, 1865 His Name appears as a signature to a Roll of prisoners of war paroled at Camp Morton, Ind. and forwarded to point Lookout, MD. via the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad for exchange in pursuance of instructions Received by telegraph from the Commissary General of Prisoners dated Washington, DC march 10, 1865.
march 23, 1865 His name appears on a Roll of those received at Boulware's and Cox's Warf, James River VA., from John E. Mulford, Brev't Brig. Gen. and US Agent of Exchange, 1011 paroled Prsoners of war.

Anderson Williams

Anderson enlisted as a corporal in Nov 1862 in Hancock County, Tennessee under the command of General McKenzie and Captain John Graham. On 27 JULY 1863, he was shot in the right knee tearing off the knee cap and was carried from the battlefield somewhere between Irvine and Winchester, Kentucky. The next day he was taken prisoner. He was held for 3 weeks in a private home because his knee was so bad they couldn''t move him. He was then taken to Camp Chase, Columbus, Ohio. He received NO medical attention for his wounds. He also lost the left side of his left hand, left of the 2nd finger in an accident at Camp Chase. He also developed severe kidney and bladder infections which bothered him for the rest of his life. However, he managed NOT to contract small pox during the epidemic there in 1864. According to his report, he NEVER received any medical attention for his wounds or illnesses. On 12 March 1865 he was exchanged and returned to his unit in Richmond, Virginia where he remained until General Lee surrendered. He then made his way back home.

Born 7-29-1842/died 5-12-1933. He enlisted as a Pvt. on 10-29-1861 (Knoxville,TN) in Mullendore's Co. H in the 5th Tenn. Cav. Reg. under Col. G.W. Mckenzie. He was in the Battle of Chickamauga (19-20 Sep 1863) under Brig.Gen. Nathan B. Forrest. In this battle he received 4 wounds (two in each thigh). These wounds prevented him from riding a horse and was transferred to the 61st or 62nd Tenn. Reg. until his discharge on 5-20-1865. He received a pension until his death.

Then listed ' AWOL since 3-17-63.' He then appears on the roll as a 3rd Lt in Capt A.A.Millard`s Cav Co. of home & railroad guards at Bristol,Tn. He surrendered May 5,1865 and took the oath at Jonesboro,Tn.on May 22. Described as 5`8' ' fair complexion,sandy hair,and gray eyes. ' In later years, Eldridge apparently answered the call to the ministry

His Grandparents were George Kincheloe & Sallie Buckner ancestor / relatives in East Tennessee: George Kincheloe,
killed by accident by his own command near Chattanooga, TN in May of 1862, his son George Franklin Kincheloe Jr. having in his possession in Medford, OR, the bullet that caused his death. His remains were shipped from Chattanooga to Jonesboro, TN by train, his father, James Horace, Sr. taking his remains from the train there to his home for burial. The roads for the 12 mile travel were so muddy and near impassible that it took 4 horses to get through , the round trip, (24 miles) required 2 days.

this is my 5th great grandfather on my fathers side. He was wounded in late 1863 while on a scouting mission between boston ky. and williamberg ky. he was injured when his horse stumbled on a rock in the cumberland river and threw him on his saddle horn and ruptured his stomach while crossing the cumberland river .He was told to go home or the hospital some where out of the way until he was fit for duty. He went home and was later wrote in as a deserter because he didnt get a discharge paper to go home. He pationed for his pension in 1895 and finaly got his pension in 1910 for 12.00 per month until his death in 1912. He is buried in greenwood cemetery ,Chattanooga tn. He had a brother who was in the 5th. tn. e co. cavalry and a bother who was in the 34th texas cavalry co. k. and a half brother who was in the 29th texas cavalry. all the brothers servived the war.
