Peter D. Burkett - Private
Pvt. Peter D. Burkett,1827-1910, was my great-great-grandfather. He had during his long life five wives, possibly only four to whom he was formally married. I am descended from his first wife, Lavina Hawthorne, who died during the Civil War, while Peter was serving in the long campaigns stretching from Chancellorsville and Gettysburg to the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, and the siege of Petersburg, to the surrender at Appomattox. Lavina was a descendant of the distinguished Fisher family of Pennsylvania who settled with William Penn. Peter was Pennsylvania 'Dutch', i.e., German, whose ancestors fought in the Revolutionary War. His daughter, Lydia, whom Peter abandoned to relatives of his wife after the war and her mother, Lavina's, death, and, as a girl, was 'farmed out' to neighbors as a maid and farmworker, married Daniel Deeter, a private during the war with the 211th Pennsylvania, which also participated in the Petersburg siege and the surrender at Appomattox. Daniel and Lydia were the parents of my maternal grandfather's father, Charles Palmer Deeter (1860-1928).
