This is my g-g-grandfather. He served in Company C, 138th Regt., Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry from August 20, 1862, until June 23rd, 1865. He had a brother, Charles, who enlisted the same day but deserted in 1864.

Enlisted as a volunteer in Harrisburg at Camp Curtin on August 17, 1862 to serve 3 years.

He was wounded in combat (I think Petersburg - still trying to determine the facts of this), shot in the left shoulder for which he received a pension of eight dollars a month.

He did serve the full 3 years, being discharged on June 23, 1865 having been mustered out of company after the war.

Enlisted: Aug 22, 1862 at Bendersville Pa. Killed at Saylers Creek Va. on April 6, 1865. Battles/Skirmishes Participated In: Wapping Heights, July 23, 1863. Brandy Station, Nov 8, 1863. Mine Run Campaign, Nov 26 - Dec 2, 1863. Locust Grove/Paine’s Farm, Nov 27, 1863. Wilderness, May 5, 1864. Wounded in the left arm above the elbow at 8 P.M. Described as a flesh wound in his diary. Walked to the field hospital the next day. Admitted to Harewood General Hospital, May 12, 1864. Transferred to Philadelphia Citizens Hospital, May 29, 1864. Arriving on the 30th. Conveyed & Admitted to Cuyler Hospital, May 31, 1864. Transferred to Philadelphia to the Provost Marshal, and then camped at the fairgrounds, July 11, 1864. Marched to docks and took steam boat to Washington D. C., July 13-16, 1864. Rejoined Regiment, July 23, 1864. Became sick and took an ambulance train to Harpers Ferry, Aug 14, 1864. Admitted to a field hospital in Sandy Hook, Aug 16, 1864. Transferred to Jarvis General Hospital, Aug 17, 1864. Arriving on the 18th. Transferred to Chestnut Hill Genl. Hospital Pa., Sept 21, 1864. Arriving on the 22. Discharged from Chestnut Hill Genl. Hospital, Sept 26, 1864. Cedar Creek. Oct 19, 1864. Assault on Petersburg. Apr 2, 1865. Killed at Saylers Creek. Apr 6, 1865. Buried on the battlefield until disinterred and sent home to be buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Gettysburg Pa. on Nov 4, 1865. Mustered in August 22 1862 and after serving 3 years of service mustered out June 23 1865. David was born 1836 in Straban township near Gettysburg, PA. The fourth child of Jacob and Sophia Herman. He was a drummer and in his diary mentions the battles of the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, Winchester, and Ceder Creek.
