Private Cane joined the 3rd PVI in May 1861 at Camp Curtin, Harrisburg PA as part of Lincoln's initial call for 75,000 troops. He serves out his 3 month enlistment and musters out on 29 July 1861. He later (4 October 1861) enlists in the 54th PVI. During his time in th 3rd PVI, he participate in th occupation of Martinsburg, Virginia (now Martinsburg, West Virginia)
