Daniel enlisted on February 10, 1864, at age 17, receiving a $300 bounty. He was killed by enemy gunfire at the battle of Bentonville, NC on March 19, 1865, one of the last major battles of the Civil War. He is buried at the National Cemetery at Raleigh, NC.

George Hupp was born in Newark, Ohio, December 15,1842. He died at Newton, Kansas Thursday, July 5,1917, of diabetes. He was one of nine children, being the son of George and Sarah Hupp. He was the last of the family to be called home. At the age of 20 years he enlisted in Company F. 121st. Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and served in the army of the Cumberland under General Thomas. He was in the battles of Perryville, Chickamauga and Kensaw Mountain. He was later transferred to Sherman's division and participated in the march to the sea. He received an honorable discharge at the conclusion of the war. He then went to Illinois and remained there two and one-half years, coming to Kansas in 1868, taking up the homestead which continued to be his home since 1872. He married Elizabeth McArdle,

Enlisted Aug 22 1862. At Chickimauga, Ga Sep 20 1863 struck by a fragment of a shell (2 by 1/4 inches) which buried itself in the fleshy part of the hip, and so disabled him that he was unfit for further service and was honorably discharged May 30, 1865. My 3rd great grandfather. His brother Jesse W Gardner served and died in the 32nd OVI.
