Charles Philip (Philo) Barnard - Private |
My great-grandfather Charles Philip Barnard prefered to be called 'Philo'. He attended Oberlin College in Ohio but left to join the Union Army. He was only 15 when he enlisted. He was in four major battles and suffered severe sunstroke at Jonesboro GA while on Sherman's March through Georgia. He never really recovered and suffered debilatating headaches, vision problems for the remainder of his life.
He married Isadora Nesbitt in 1867. They had several children:
Nell,Charlotte,Ruth,Myrtle,John,Philo Jr.,Harold and Esther. (There may have been another daughter before Nell). After the War, they lived in Ohio. In about 1885, the family moved to Pentwater, Michigan.
