This is my 4 time great grandfather on my father's side of the family. He was said to have been captured in Virginia.

Jonas was a resident in Stanly Co. NC. And enlisted in Rowan Co. at the age of 23, on July 4th, 1862. He was mustered in a private. He was reported present through October 31 1863. Captured at Rappahannoch Station. VA, November 7 1863. Confined at Point Lookout, MD. Paroled from Point Lookout, MD on March 20 1864. Received at City Point, VA, March 20 1864. Promoted to Sargent in September-October, 1864. Promoted to 1st Sgt. on or about December 1 1864. Captured at Farmville, VA, April 6 1865. Confined at Newport News, VA, April 14 1865. Released at Newport News, VA on June 26 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance. (May have served previously as Capt. In the 83rd Regiment NC Militia.)

1st Lieutenant PARNELL, BENJAMIN 1828-1899, Company 'A' commander. Resided in Davie County and was by occupation a smith prior to enlisting in Rowan County at age 34. Appointed 2nd Lieutenant on July 4, 1862. Reported in command of Company 'A' in September, 1862 - February, 1863. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on January 8, 1863. Resigned on April 10, 1863, for reasons of health (Heart). Resignation accepted on or about April 25, 1863. Benjamin moves to Mocksville in 1854 from Johnson County NC. Son of Benjamin and Cathreen Parnell, he is married to Susanne E. (Parnell) Hudson 1825-1891. Susanne’s father was Joseph Hudson and Elizabeth (Unknown)

After the war he runs a blacksmith shop in Mocksville called 'Parnell & Hendricks'.

Enlisted 07/04/1862. Died of 'brain fever' 11/17/1862, Culpeper Courthouse, VA.

John was born abt 1829 in Rowan Co. NC. He is about 35 when he enlists 4 July 1862 at Salisbury, Rowen Co. NC. In Capt John Beards Co 57th NC Vols. for three years or the war. This became Co C. He has 23 cards in his archival file. On 5 April 1863 he is sent to the hospital sick. and on 3 Dec 1863 he is sent again to the hospital as sick. 20 July 1864 he is captured near Winchester Va and taken POW. He is sent to Camp Chase near Columbus, Ohio where they say he died of smallpox on 8 Nov 1864. I suspect a combination of cold weather, poor housing & starvation diet led to the death of many in this and other northern prisons.. See the details of a Col Hoffman who was in charge of northern prisons.. His own men at trial after the war said he starved many a man to death. He even bragged that he had killed more rebels than many a front line unit..
Assigned to Generals, Law's, Hoke's, Godwin & W. G. Lewis's Brigades. John is buried in grave # 431 at Camp Chase. I have not been able to get a picture of his stone.

Daniel Monroe Bostian was my great grandfather. According to my grandfather's notes, Daniel Monroe entered service July 4 1862 and was captured November 6, 1863. He was discharged at the war's end. His company commander was John Beard.

carmi j. wagoner(waggoner) enlisted 7-4-1862 as private at salisbury, nc. served throughout war and surrendered with general robert e. lee at appomattox court house, va. april 9, 1865. of the approximate 1000 men that comprised the original 57th, there were about 75 men remaining who surrenedered with lee at appommatox. from there he walked home to mt. ulla, nc. he was paroled at salisbury, nc may 24, 1865.

John Frazier was my great,great-grandfather and enlisted in the 57th NC Infantry Regiment from Forsyth County on July 4th 1862. He was in the battle of Gettysburg and subsequently was captured and taken prisoner. He was incarcerated and died at the Federal Prison at Point Lookout Maryland before the war ended.

Phillip was my great great 1st cousin who enlisted 03/07/1864 and was later wounded at the Wilderness 10/19/1864. Unk if captured, died or survived the war.

Tenison was my great, great, great grandfather and was from Forsyth County NC. He enlisted in the Confederate Army on July 4th 1862 in Rowan County NC .He died at Chimborazo hospital in Richmond, VA on March 25th, 1863 at the age of 35 from measles. He was assigned to; General Law's, Hoke's, Godwin's and WG Lewis's brigades. If anyone has more information on the 57th Regiment, NC Infantry Co D. I would love to know more. Tenison is buried in Clemmons, NC (Forsyth County)

- James Calvin Zimmerman enlisted as a Private on 04 July 1862 in Forsyth County at the age of 29 Enlisted in Company D of the 57th North Carolina Infantry.
His original letters to different relatives and friends about the Conditions of the War and many battles can be found in Duke University Historical Records Department.
They were also Transcribed in a book called 'The Fighting 57th North Carolina: The Life and Letters of James Calvin Zimmerman' written and transcribed by William Hartley and James Zimmerman. The book is an interesting account of the struggles and morale issues that the soldiers faced. There are a few inaccuracies in the family timeline at the end of the book, but a great historical reference.

Enlisted 07-07-1862. Wounded 10-20-1862. Hospitalized in Richmond.

George Cansler was captured at the ill-fated Battle of the Rappahannock on 7 Nobvember 1863. He was sent to Point Lookout, Maryland and was released in a prisoner exchange on 10 February 1865.

Jacob Lantz, son of Jacob Lantz and Sabina Hoke, was born 8 Aug 1819, died 28 Apr 1864 at Point Lookout Prison Camp, Maryland. He was captured at the Battle of Gettysburg.

Enlisted 7-4-62 at Catawba Co, NC. Private. In hospital 11-22-62 with chronic rheumatism at Richmond, VA. Died 12-3-62 of pneumonia at Richmond, VA hospital.

Pvt. John Milton Faggart b. 29 Mar 1831, Cabarrus County, NC. d. 7 Sep 1901, Cabarrus County, NC. Buried at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church, Concord, NC.

Pvt. John Milton Faggart enlisted on 7 JUl 1862 into Co F, 57th NC Regiment. On 3 May 1863 he was captured at Chancellorsville, Va. and was released in a prisoner exchange. He was in a Confederate hospital in Farmville, Va on 3 Aug 1863 for chronic diahrea.
On 7 Nov 1863 he was captured at Rappahannock Station, Va. After escaping he returned to Co F and received a chest wound on 24 Jul 1864 in Winchester, Va. Paroled on 6 Apr 1865 in Farmville, Va.
John M. Faggart was one of the founders of Prosperity Lutheran Church now named Cross of Christ Lutheran Church, Concord, NC where he is buried.

Capt. Joseph Graham Morrison born 1 Jun 1842 in Mecklenburg County, Charlotte, NC and died 11 Apr 1906 in Charlotte, NC.
He was the son of Rev. Dr. Robert Hall Morrison, a Presbyterian Minister and the first President of Davidson College, Davidson, NC and Mary Graham.
Joseph was also the brother of Mary Anna Morrison, the wife of Gen. Thomas 'Stonewall' Jackson, Isabella S. Morrison the wife of Gen. Daniel Harvey Hill, and Eugenia Erixene Morrison the wife of Gen. Rufus Clay Barringer.

Josesph was a student at VMI (Class of 1865) when the war began. He left VMI and was commissioned a Lt. and became an ADC (aide-de-camp) on his brother-in-law Gen. Thomas 'Stonewall' Jackson's staff in June 1862. In the Antietam Campaign he was ADC to Gen. Jackson and was with Gen. Jackson when he was mortally wounded at Chancellorsville in May 1863. After Chancellorsville in July 1863 rather than transferring to Gen. Ewell's command with the rest of Gen. Jackson's staff, he joined the staff of Gen. Ramseur. The Morrisons knew the Ramseurs since both had lived in Lincolnton, Lincoln County, North Carolina where the Rev. Dr. Robert Morrison had been the Pastor of Macpelah Presbyterian Church.

In Sep. 1863, Joseph Morrison was transferred to the 57th NC Regiment as Adjutant. By 1865 he was a Captain of Co F, 57th NC Regiment and lost a foot shortly after at Petersburg while away from his regiment visiting Gen. Hoke.

After the war he was suffering from tuberculosis and spent the four years following the war in California recuperating. In 1869, he came home to North Carolina where he was a planter and ran the Mariposa Cotton Mills. He returned to claim the family home upon his father's death in 1889 and himself died at Charlotte, NC on 11 Apr 1906. Capt. Morrison is buried at the Macpelah Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Lincolnton, Lincoln County, NC. He was the husband of Jennie E. Davis.

John G. Rowland was my grandfather's uncle, who was named for him, and after whom I was named. He joined the regiment on Jul 17, 1862 and except for some hospital time from Jan to May 1863, was continuously with the regiment. He was captured during the battle of Stephenson's Depot (or Rutherford's Farm) near Winchester on July 20, 1864, when the regiment was routed. He was taken initially to a prison camp in Wheeling and was transferred to Camp Chase near Columbus, Ohio, where he died of smallpox on Nov 9, and was buried at the Confederate cemetery nearby in grave 443, with a headstone still standing and readable.

Capt. Miller's photo on uniform is book published. He looks identical to uncle Capt. Eli Propst, CSA; except one has three-button cuffs, the other four buttons. His parents were John Cyrus Miller and Sophie Propst of Rowan Co., N.C., from Cabarrus Co. Capt. Miller's remains fetched back from Fredericksburg by Rev. Samuel D. Rothrock, buried Bethal Lutheran. Originally in Rowan Co. CSA militia with double brother-in-law 'Squire' Capt. Abner Leander Hall (Pvt. regular service). Son Lutheran Rev. John Abner Locke Miller wed Mary Ann Pinkston, daughter of Pvt. Wm. Franklin Pinkston of Co. K. Jim Miller, Southport, N.C.

Pvt. Pinkston never recover from war illness, died soon after, seek Rowan Co., N.C. grave and of wife Mrs. Jamimia Sloan Pinkston. Daughter Mary Ann Pinkston (d Willis, Va., 1929) wed Lutheran Rev. John Abner Locke Miller, Son of Capt. A. A. Miller of Co. K, 57th NCT. Rev. Locke Miller (d Concord, N.C. 1945) buried Bethal Luthern with father and grandfather John Cyrus Miller.

HIS FULL NAME IS ACTUALLY GENERAL ANDREW JACKSON SECHLER, BEING NAMED AFTER ANDREW JACKSON. HE WENT BY G.A.J. SECHLER. HE ENTERED SERVICE AS A PRIVATE AND ROSE THRU THE RANKS TO CAPT.

This man is my great, great, great grandfather. He enlisted in Rowan County July 7, 1862 at the age of 44. He was later captured at Rappahannock Station, Va. and was imprisoned at Point Lookout, Md. He was recieved at City Point, Va, March 20, 1864 for exchange. Took the oath of allegiance in Salisbury on June 1, 1865. I would like to have documentation to prove these facts, ie. copies of prison records or copies of the allegiance voucher. Feel free to e-mail me at any time.
