Nevertheless, although he was a farmer, he obviously was very committed to have left his family to defend the CSA at his age. Most conscripts and enlistees were in their 20s. Records show he was killed on 1 July 1863 at Gettysburg on the first day of Battle. I have tried to find him in burial records at Gettysburg, but have not had success to date. John was my husband's gg grandfather.

Reported present in June 1862. Wounded in the head at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 3, 1863. Returned to duty on an unspecified date. Reported present in May-June and September-October 1864. Name appears on a receipt roll for clothing dated November 1864. Reported in hospital near Petersburg, Virginia, January 5, 1865, “very bad off with scurvie (sic).” Survived the war.

Paroled at Point Lookout on February 13, 1865. Received at Cox's Wharf, James River, Virginia on or about February 15, 1865 for exchange. Survived the war.

John Dallas Yancey - Private

Dallas Yancey volunteered on May 10, 1863 (age 18) from Granville County. He was captured at Gettysburg on July 4, 1863, and transported to Fort Delaware via Harrisburg and Philadelphia. He died at Fort Delaware on October 10, 1863, and is buried in a mass grave at Finns Point National Cemetery.
