He was captured by the 23rd Ill on Jul 14, 1863/ He was sent to Camp Chase on Jul 22, 1863 and then taken to Williamsport Md. He escaped on Sep 20, 1864 from prison. In Jul / Aug 1864 he is listed as absent and sick. He deserted on Mar 8, 1865 to the US Army of the Potomac. On Mar 10, 1865 he was transferred from the Army of the James to Burlington Mo after taken the oath.

He was transferred to Fort Pulaski Ga on Oct 20, 1864 and sent back to Hilton Head SC in Nov 1864. He was transferred to Fort Delaware Del from Hilton Head SC on Mar 12, 1865. He was released from Fort Delaware on Jun 16, 1865 after taken the Oath of Allegiance. He became a Reverend after the war.

1838 – 1870 Enlisted Jun 15, 1861 at age 24 and stood 5’ 10 ¾” and he was a laborer. Promoted to corporal on Nov, 1861. He was wounded by a gunshot to his left shoulder joint on May 3, 1863 at Chancellorsville and taken to General Hospital No 24 (General Hospital #24 was also called Moore’s Hospital, Harwood’s Hospital, and North Carolina hospital) located on the southwest corner of 26th and Main Streets in Richmond on May 10, 1863. He was furloughed for 60 days on Sept 5, 1863 and sent home to recover from wounds. His sick furlough was extended another 50 days on July 12, 1864. He was retired on Nov 24, 1864 from his wound.

He was captured at New Hanover Court House on 27 May, 1862. On 12 May, 1864 he was captured at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia and taken to Point Lookout Md. He was taken to Elmira NY on 3 Aug, 1864 where he died 23 Sep 1864 of chronic diarrhea.

He looked upon fighting as a serious business, and his accounts of what he had witnessed in Mexico did not tend to sharpen our appetites for it. William Davenport Wiseman was born in Yancey County NC, present day Avery County in 1836. His father and mother was Alexander and Delilah Fox Wiseman. Williams younger brother, Aaron was already in service when William joined the CSA army at the Age of 25, July 18, 1862. William had moved away from the home place and was living near Henrietta, Rutherford County NC. Just before going into service he and Victoria Durham were married and they moved to High Shoals, Rutherford County. William was in Company E of the 18th Reg. NC state troops. He remained with that unit until discharged at end of war. I do not have day to day events but they must have been rough. Many battles and many casualties. William lived out his days and raised a large family at High Shoals. Died December 1, 1901. He and Victoria were laid to rest at High Shoals Baptist church Cemetery.

Duncan was from Richmond Co NC. He enlisted 1 June 1861 and was mustered at Wilmington NC on 15 June 1861. He was 18 years old. Co F was known as [The Scotch Guards] He was a farmer 5 foot 10 inches tall. His unit moved to Virginia and fought at Mechanicsville. He was wounded at Hanover Court house Va. on 27 May 1862. Taken as POW to Fort Monroe Va. where he died at Yorktown , York Co. Va. on 6 June 1862. His father filed for compensation on 10 June 1862. He is buried at Old Hundred Cem. Laurel Hill, Scotland Co. NC.

He is buried at Woodlawn National Cemetery in Elmira, New York (Section Csa Site 1507).

Wesley`s brother Pvt. Simeon Nelson Bumgarner had enlisted in the 52nd NC company F back in March of 62 and had written a letter to his father in Apr. 62 telling him not to let his younger brother Wesley enlist unless he had to because it was near hell in camp mangum, with a lot of the men dying from mumps and measles.
So Wes was one of the reluctant ones to serve the Confederacy, He stayed home until early September ,when the Conscript detail came to Wilkes county and started rounding up the ones who hadn`t volunteered to go before....
Wes was assigned to Co. H. 18th Nc. and soon was on the front lines in Virginia when he decided to go home again, which he did in August of 63....In October of 63 he wrote a letter home saying they had caught him and were sending him back to Richmond..
He spoke of being treated like a yankee and spending time in the guardhouse in Salisbury and as he said, 'almost every guardhouse in Virginia', before he arrived at 'Castle Thunder'.
His letter of October 26 1863 informed his father that he was once again with his Regiment and the only punishment he got was a long ride on the 'Old Bull' and a few weeks in Castle Thunder.
Wesley was captured on May 8 1864 at Spotsylvania Courthouse,during the battle of the Wilderness..along with his friend and cousin James Bullis and sent to Point lookout Maryland..James survived this ordeal and informed his family of Wesley`s demise and the causes of it..

wesley`s name is engraved on the Monument at Point Lookout maryland...

The official reason for death was Chronic Diarrhea,but james Bullis,who was there with him said he was starved to death...Wesley was buried in a mass grave near the prison camp in an area noted only as 1004 B,how many men were buried there is unknown,because the union prison Guards were notorious liars...They wanted to hide the exact numbers of deaths that occured in the Northern prison camps Most of which came from intentional starving.

William was born in Salisbury, Rowan Co. NC 20 Dec 1840. He was 22 when he was conscripted 7 Sept 1862. His CMR's are noted mostly as present. He has several bouts of illness and on 16 Dec 1864 he is assigned as a Guard at the Brigade Hospital. He also served part time as a nurse. 10 March 1865 he is suffering from a leg ulcer and is given a 60 day furlough. He is captured in his sick bed and paroled 18 May 1865 at his home in Salisbury . His unit was engaged in most of the large battles in Va and NC. He is married to Elisabeth Jane Hoffner.
Note to researcher: Their is another William Hoffman's CMR's intermingled with our William: However the other William died as POW in 1865 on Hart Island in NY Harbor.

He was born 1835 in Columbus County, NC. He enlisted on April 23, 1861 in Columbus County, NC and on April 23, 1861 mustered into Company H, NC 18th Infantry. He was a POW May 27, 1862 at Hanover Court House, Virginia and was also wounded at Hanover Court House. He died of wounds on June 11, 1862 at Yorktown, Virginia.

He was born 1839 in Columbus County, NC. He enlisted April 23, 1861 in Columbus County and mustered into Company H, NC 18th Infantry on the same day. He was wounded May 31, 1862 and returned November 30, 1862. He was killed on May 2, 1863 at Chancellorsville, Virginia.

He would have been a cousin the Pvt Green

I am looking for a copy of a private letter written by this man in 1862. Also any genealogy related to this man is needed.

He enlisted in 1862, was wounded at the battle of Hanover Courthouse VA and died there.

'Thomas M. Casey enlisted in Wake County on 9-10-1862. Present until wounded in the hand at Fredericksburg, VA, on 12-13-1862. Returned to duty May-June 1863. Captured at Gettysburg, PA, on 7-2-1863 and confined at Ft. Delaware, DE, Oct. 15-18, 1863. Paroled from there and transferred to Boulware's Wharf, VA, where he was received about 2-20-1865 for exchange. Reported present with a detachment of paroled and exchanged prisoners at Camp Lee near Richmond, VA, on 2-25-1865 (NCT VI, 403).
Thomas M. Casey, the son of John Casey, Jr., and Jane Walker Casey (Heritage, 310), married Nancy L. Windsor on 1-2-1854 (YCMR), the daughter of Daniel and Sally Arnold Windsor. They had six children: William Andrew, James Henry, John Melmuth, Daniel W., Mary Jane, and Sallie A Casey. Ran away from home at 15 and joined Company I, the Wilmington Rifle Guards, 30th Regiment, North Carolina Militia, later redesignated the 18th North Carolina Infantry. Participated in the capture of Fort Caswell on the 16th and 17th of April 1861. He served as private for one year with the regiment and transferred to the 50th North Carolina Infantry.

David enlisted at Fort Caswell on April 28, 1861 leaving behind a wife and 10 month old daughter. As the war progressed, he was eventually put in the President's Guard (for those unfit for field duty) but eventually was sent back to regular duty. He was paroled with his regiment at Appomattox.

David spent the next 53 years in the North Carolina State Asylum. He died there in 1918 at the age of 79.

1839 – 1863. He stood 5’ 8” and was a farmer. He enlisted on Apr 26, 1861 at age 22 with the rank of Corporal. He was demoted to Private on Nov 30, 1861, He was wounded on Dec 13, 1862 during the Fredericksburg battle. He was admitted in the Chimborazo No 3 Hospital Richmond VA on Dec 20, 1862. He was admitted in the 3d Division General Hospital Camp Winder Richmond VA on Dec 31, 1862. He was transferred to the CSA General Hospital Danville VA on Mar 14, 1863. He died of smallpox on Jun 20, 1863 at Danville Hospital. He had $21.05 in his effects at the time of his death.

Buried: Confederate soldiers who died at the CSA General Hospital at Danville were buried in Green Hill Cemetery which borders the National Cemetery at Danville. However, none of the graves were marked.

1834 – 1877. He enlisted on Jun 15, 1861 at age 27. He was a farmer and stood 5’ 9” with a light complexion, light colored hair and blue eyes. He was wounded during the battle of Manassas on Aug 29, 1862. He was admitted to the CSA General Hospital in Charlottesville VA on Sep 23, 1862 with a gunshot wound to his thigh. He was discharged from service on Sep 30, 1862 due to sciatic nerve damage causing partial paralyze to his leg from the gunshot wound. His Certificate of Disability for Discharge was received on Oct6, 1862. He received his final pay on Feb 27, 1863.

He deserted on Aug 12, 1863.
