He enlisted April 17, 1861, in the 8th New York for three months, and re-enlisted in the 67th New York under Colonel Adams, and was a participant in the first battle of Bull Run, later being detailed to the secret service with Major Pinkerton's force, the originator of the famous Pinkerton detective agency of a later day. He was serving in the latter capacity when he was discharged on the 3rd of July, 1865, after four years and three months of faithful and loyal service.
