HIS PARENTS HAD MOVED TO BRETON, WASHINGTON COUNTY, MISSOURI BY 1850 U. S. FEDERAL CENSUS. HE ENLISTED IN THE 31ST MO INFANTRY, ON AUGUST 6, 1862. HE DIED AT YOUNG'S POINT, LA OF (DIPTHERIA) ON 29 JAN 1863 AT THE AGE OF TWENTY. BURIAL SITE UNKNOWN. REFERENCES: CIVIL WAR SERVICE RECORD, BELLFIELD, JOHN THOMAS, NATIONAL ARCHIVES.

Thomas J. Walters my great grandfather he joined the 31st Infantry and fought with them through all the major conflicts till muster out in 1865. He returned to Macon county, Missouri. He is listed in the 1870 census owning a large farm by 1880 however after the panic, his children are living with relatives,he is listed as divorced, his wife is living with her mother and father and is listed as a widow, he is listed as a coal miner. He died at age 92. I regret not knowing this until recently I would have enjoyed quizzing my mom for her memories of grandpa Thomas.

James served in the 31st Missouri Volunteers Infantry and died following the Battle of Vicksburg. He died on 13 Aug 1863 from edema or dropsy. The family story is that his mother said, 'My dear son died as a result of poor sanitary conditions, lack of nourishing food, and poor medical care.'
James' parents were my second great grandparents, and James was my second greatuncle.

Gideon Stump was my great grand-uncle. He died on the hospital boat Henry Von Phul, 26 Jan 1863 of wounds received in action in the Battle of Arkansas Point at Fort Hindman. No record of his burial site has been found.
