James Washington Smith Rank Unknown |
James Washington Smith (1842-1910) made a note of his war record in a portfolio he captured in Arkansas in 1862 with a pen captured in Glasgow (Missouri) in 1864. He served in Col. Jeffers’ Regiment (8th MO Cavalry), Marmaduke’s Brigade, Marmaduke’s Division. Additional information about his service was contained in a typed note found in packet of letters belonging to Alf Smith, probably written by one of J.W. Smith’s nieces, Hortense and Mildred Smith. Source: David E. Smith, Jr., The Expansible History of the Smiths of Southeast Missouri (Galveston, Tex., June 1991).
James W. Smith was listed as a private soldier on the roster of Company E, 8th Missouri Cavalry CSA. Source: Missouri Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans, http://www.missouridivision-scv.org/mounits/8mocav.htm.

Lacy Meadows Midgett - 1st Sergeant |
Joined 9/27/1862 in Cape Girardeau Co, MO, appointed First Sergeant 10/8/1862. He deserted (!) 8/18/1863, along with numerous other members of his company, apparently because they were dismounted and being transferred to the infantry. The FULTON COUNTY HISTORY (Kentucky) says he served in the 3rd Kentucky Regiment, CSA, so he probably returned to his home in Graves Co, KY to re-join there.
