Enlisted St. Paul 17 June 1861, discharged for promotion 3 Apr 1862. Died 22 May 1885. From his obituary 23 May 1885 in New York Times: 'Col. Hunter Brooke, of Ohio, a clerk in the Adjutant-General's office in Washington, died yesterday of pneumonia after a brief illness. Col. Brooke served as a staff officer during the war with Gen. Robert L. McCook, Rosecrans and George H. Thomas. He entered the service as a private in the Second Minnesota Infantry and at the close of the war was Judge-Advocate-General of the Department of the South.'

Place and date: At Chickamauga, Ga., 19 September 1863; At Missionary Ridge, Tenn., 25 November 1863. Entered service at: Glencoe, Minn. Birth: Maine. Date of issue: 2 April 1898. Citation: While in arrest at Chickamauga, Ga., left his place in the rear and voluntarily went to the line of battle, secured a rifle, and fought gallantly during the 2_day battle; was released from arrest in recognition of his bravery. At Missionary Ridge commanded his company and gallantly led it, being among the first to enter the enemy's works; was severely wounded, losing an arm, but declined a discharge and remained in active service to the end of the war.
