Wm. BODENDORFER died Nov. 7, 1883 @ age 48 in Muskegon. He came to America in 1849, & went to work on a farm in WI. before moving to Muskegon. Wm. served in the Civil War, MI. VolunteerHe married Anna Kunegunda HOFFMANN May 14, 1869. Anna died Aug. 26, 1911 @ age 60. They had 4 children, William Andrew b. May 26, 1870.- Fred Anthony b. Feb. 21, 1872- Anna- & John. John died Sept. 21, 1928.- Anna died July 14, 1936.- Fred died Jan. 9, 1940.- Wm. A. died Feb. 14, 1940.

Miles enlisted in Company A, 3rd Michigan with the rank of 3rd Sergeant. He was wounded at the battle of Fair Oaks, Virginia, on May 31, 1862. While recovering from his wound he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant of Company K, but his wounds never fully healed and he submitted his resignation on February 16, 1863. In 1864 he enlisted in the Veteran's Reserve Corps as a 2nd Lieutenant, and was assigned to Company A, 20th Regiment V.R.C. He served with this unit until the end of the war. Miles died in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on December 17, 1902. He is buried in Fulton Cemetery in Grand Rapids in an unmarked grave.

My GGrandfather was in the Michigan 3rd Infantry until it was reorganized into the Michigan 5th. Both he and his brother Alfred G. Bates were from Grand Rapids, MI and both spent much of their military time in the hospital where there were medics/corpsmen of some kind. Alfred G. was taken prisoner by the confederates on Nov. 30, 1863 and was not reorganized into the Michigan 5th. Alfred G. survived Andersonville and was discharged sometime in late 1864/early 1865. Benjamin was promoted to Corporal shortly before the end of the war and was discharged after the war ended; probably May 1865.

McClellan in his Peninsular Campaign of 1862, where his unit participated in the seige of Yorktown & the Battle of Williamsburg; died of typhoid fever 15 Jun 1862 at Knight Military Hospital, New Haven CT as a result of wounds received at the Battle of Fair Oaks VA on 31 May 1862. Buried Evergreen Cemetery, New Haven CT.

Enlisted in Company B as a Sergeant on May 13, 1861 at Grand Rapids for three years at age 22. Promoted to First Sergeant on Jan. 1, 1862. Promoted to 2nd Lt. on May 21, 1862. Promoted to 1st Lt. on November 1, 1862. Promoted to Captain on Jan. 18, 1864. Wounded in the head at the Battle of the Wilderness returning in time to muster out with the rest of his regiment on June 20th, 1864.
Died December 12, 1909 at Grand Island, Nebraska.

Enlisted in Company B on May 13, 1861 at Grand Rapids for 3 years at age 33. Missing in action at White Oak Swamp, Va. on July 1, 1862. Returned to regiment at Harrison''s Landing, Va. Aug. 6, 1862. Wounded in action at Chancellorsville, Va. May 3, 1863. No further record, but may have been captured and died at Andersonville prison. The cemetary there lists a James Scribner as buried there.

It was during the December 1863 Furlough of the 3rd Michigan that Fidel enlisted at Grand Rapids and joined Regiment in Virginia on January 4 1864. Fidel was wounded by a ball wound in the chest on May 5 1864 at the Battle of the Wilderness . Battle commenced on May 4.. Eventually transported , perhaps by boat , to Finley Hospital Washington DC he died upon arrival on May 18 and was buried Arlington May 19 and became one of the first burials of Union Soldiers. The first was buried on May 14 1864.

John Seites determined in October 2001 ,while in Washington for a change of command at the Washington Navy Yard , took a personal walking of the known Union burials in section K , as advised by clerk at desk , on a Friday afternoon that he had been buried as Fithil Barl Michigan. There was no indication of Michigan Unit on the grave marker.
John returned Saturday and had to enter through a back door .Offices closed that Saturday due to burial of Lt. General killed Pentagon September 11 2001. However John was able to present sketch of what was on ground in Section K to a person in the office. Went to card file and card had Fithil Barl 3rd Michigan Co. C. This told John that grave was Fidel Bail.
For at least three generations had been working through Michigan congressman and others trying to find his burial site and was thought to be Gettysburg. Letters that John wrote and asked said he was not there. These letters were written after reading the Roll of Honor published in 1869 that had F. Bail interned at Arlington. John prepared letter with Fidel's Civil War service record .With the help of Senator Reed RI and records of Civil War service of Fidel obtained by John Seites was presented to the Army. . Previous letters by John to the Arlington superintendent were unanswered. Reason sent in October 2001 and Historian said reason Washington was under attack, Anthrax? First letter from Senator Reed through his Army Liaison was not answered in three months and he followed up. This caused Arlington to review their records and correction was made and a new marker installation started fall of 2002 was placed in the spring of 2003.
However his name is now spelled as indicated on the transfer document received by the cemetery from Finley . This document recorded him as FEDILE BAIL. John argued with Arlington historian on the telephone it should be FIDEL as indicated on his enlistment papers and as known by the family. Historian said transfer document was historical document and had to be used. John argued Enlistment record also historical. In Johns, mind Arlington had control and to be a good accountant they had to record an interred body by name delivered to cemetery for burial.
When John was in Washington DC in spring of 2003 he reviewed the new marker and as a sidelight there were new markers for others and at least one was changed from a specific individual to UNKOWN.
Did Arlington get the message.
To quote General Sherman'
' it is a soldiers fate to be buried in a grave with the wrong marker'
Fidel achieved that for 139 years.
Arlington is operated by the Army and not the VA as are other national Cemeteries.

p. 63: In the Odd Fellows, Germania lodge of Muskegon City, a G. Schwegen is listed as a member. [Noted because the name Schwegler, hand written, could be read as Schwegen]

p. 81 (in the 'biographies' section): 'George Schwegler is a native of Germany and came to this county in 1849. In 1859 he came to Muskegon from Manistee. Upon the breaking out of the war in 1861 he enlisted and served until the close of the war. He was wounded at the first battle of Bull Run. Mr. Schwegler served as Marshal in Muskegon for some time and was Deputy Sheriff for four years. He has been in the hotel business from 1878 to 1882.'

He came to Muskegon in 1856. From his obit, he had a colorful War career & was even held as a prisoner. He was 'the heaviest man in Muskegon @ 350 LBS. but was not above medium height.' A member of the police force & a city marshal for 3 yrs. George ran a saloon perhaps at corner Catherine and Western Ave. and along with John and Pius Bail at one time in 1890-1900. address as 36 West western and 1 Catherine as I read it.had 9 children and only one living in 1900.

Born in 1822 in New York. Died in Illinois. Married to Grace Flick.

Enlisted at age 44. Died of disease in Nashville, Tennessee

Elisted in company E, Thrid Infantry May 13,1861 at Grand Rapids, for three years at the age of 19. Mustered June 10 1861. Relisted December 23, 1863, at Brady Station, Va. Mustered December 24, 1863. Transferred to Company E, Fifth Infantry, June 10, 1864. Corporal. Mustered out Jeffersonville Indiana July 05, 1865.

One of the last remaining veterans of the battle of Gettysburg. He returned to Barry County's Woodland Township and Married Sarah A. Cole the lived in Barry county until 1883, when they moved to Dakota Andrew died on April 02, 1923 In South Dakota.

Enlisted in Company E, Third Infantry, May 13 1861 at Grand Rapids for three years at the age of 23. Musttered June 10 1861 Discharged for disability at Upton Hill, VA. September 30, 1862.

George L. Parker (born in Yates County NY in May 1834; died in Grand Rapids MI in February 1919) enlisted in the 3rd Michigan (reorganized) on September 9, 1864. He was mustered out at Victoria, Texas in May 25, 1866, returning to his home in Ionia County, Michigan. His younger brother, Hiram D. Parker, served in the 15th Michigan Infantry from 1861-1865. George L. Parker is my great,great-grandfather.
