James Parker (my g-g-grandfather) was a 19 year old farmer when the war came. He enlisted at Saugus on August 6, 1862, and was mustered into Co. A on August 23rd, as a gunsmith. He was mustered out on June 16th, 1865, at Richmond. Some of the more well-known engagements the 40th were in included Drewry's Bluff, Cold Harbor (as part of Smith's 18th Corps, 1st Division, 3rd Brigade), and Petersburg.
