John Grey Chambers - Lt. Colonel
Lt Col John Chambers was adjutant and later commander of the regiment. He was mortally wounded while commanding the regiment at the Battle Drury Bluff in May 1864, and died at Hampton Hospital near Ft Monroe, VA.

Capt. Alexander was more seriously wounded in the left arm while engaged in the Union capture of New Bern, N. C., 14 March 1862.
The Alexanders lived in Boston where William worked as a carpenter before enlisting with the Union Army.

my 2nd great grandfather enlisted into the 23rd Mass. regiment in July 1862 and fought in 2 major battles being wounded twice and almost killed at Drurys Bluff were half his regiment were cut to pieces, he was honorably mustered out October 1864.
