27th Maine Infantry
Company Unknown
Calvin Lewis Hayes - Sergeant Major
He served as a Sergeant major in the 27th Maine Infantry and then, a Lieutenant, as Adjutant in the 32nd Regiment Maine Infantry during the Civil War. For the first service he and others in the 27th were awarded the Medal of Honor for extending their volunteer service beyond its term, in defense of Washington at the request of the President and the Secretary of War. This came about when General Lee was invading Pennsylvania; had Lee won at Gettysburg he would have been able to turn on Washington. This award was later rescinded by the Army because criteria were revised in 1916 and those in the 27th who had received the award were deemed no longer eligible for the medal. There was a letter from the army at one time that allowed him to keep his medal.
