Silas was a member the 2nd US Sharpshooters. I could not find them in this database but they did transfer to 17th Maine on February 20, 1865 when the sharpshooters disbanded.

He died during his trip home to Maine on August 14, 1865
He was 28 years old.

James R. Hamilton: At the time of his enlistment , he was a twentytwo yearold from Vasselboro, Maine. He was five feet, eleven inches tall, light complextion, light eyes and hair. He was a shoemaker by trade. He mustered into the service on August 12, 1863 and was discharged for disability on June 6th, 1865. He served as a private in Company B, 17th Regiment, Maine Volunteer Infantry.

My great grandfather enlisted October 1, 1861 in Houlton Maine for a three year enlistment. He was assigned to Co. D 17th infantry U.S.A. The recruiting Officer and the examining surgeon were 1st Lt. Henry Walcott. He then reenlisted for 3 more years on February 29th 1864 in Pelham New York, Westchester County. This reenlistment form was sworn and subscribed to Commander of 17th Infantry Catlett Station Virginia before J. Delaney Captain
