He was 28 years old.

We discovered 32 pages of typewritten letters of his from the civil war. The letters were transcribed by his wife sometime prior to 1928. She was the editor of the Lynn County News in Tahoka TX in 1905.

My great grandfather enlisted October 1, 1861 in Houlton Maine for a three year enlistment. He was assigned to Co. D 17th infantry U.S.A. The recruiting Officer and the examining surgeon were 1st Lt. Henry Walcott. He then reenlisted for 3 more years on February 29th 1864 in Pelham New York, Westchester County. This reenlistment form was sworn and subscribed to Commander of 17th Infantry Catlett Station Virginia before J. Delaney Captain
