Mustered into the 4th Maine in Rockland on June 15, 1861. Participated in the battles of First Bull Run, the Peninsular War (Seven Days), Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg. Was wounded fatally in the thigh in the Devil's Den on the Second Day at Gettysburg and died a month later. Buried at Gettysburg.

Enlisted in Company D, Maine 4th Infantry Regiment on 15 Jun 1861. Mustered out on 28 Jul 1863 at Gettysburg, PA. Was POW? Yes Was Wounded? Yes Survived the War? No. John Gray was shot in the left shoulder, right knee, and left foot on July 2, 1863 at the Devils Den; Died on July 28 from a hemorrhage of the subclavian artery. He is buried Gettysburg National Cemetery SECT 15 ME Lot, Plot 17. The documentary Ken Burns' Civil War Episode 5, The Universe of Battle, mentions both Isaiah Valentine Eaton and John S Gray of Deer Isle, Maine. Both John and Isaiah are my cousins.

Mustered in at Rockland, ME along with six other Deer Isle men. Fought at the battle of First Bull Run, was captured by rebel cavalry the day after the battle, and was imprisoned at Libby Prison in Richmond. Wounded. Spent the next year in several rebel prisons. Was exchanged in 1862.
