John Higgins - Private
My Great Grandfather, John Higgins, joined the 28th Kentucky Infantry when it was formed and served with the unit until his death in 1865. His record included numerous hospital stays as well as 'absences' when he visited his wife and 2 young daughters in Louisville. He was charged with desertion but was later cleared of that charge. He died mysteriously while the unit was in Port Lavaca, TX after the war had ended. Record says only that he was 'buried in effects.'

Bernhard Speaker was my great-grandfather. He was born in Germany in 1834 and enlisted at Louisville, KY in 1862. Anyone with more information about the 28th KY Infantry is welcome to contact me. This company apparently had a lot of men who were from Germany.
