G-G-Uncle
Mitchell Gum enlisted in Co. A, 7th Ky Vol. Inf, USA, in June 1861. He served with the 7th at several battles in KY and in the entire Vicksburg Campaign of 1863. Shortly after Vicksburg was taken, he became seriously ill and was sent by hospital boat to St. Louis. He was later sent to the 7th Kentucky's Convalescent barracks in Louisville and mustered out with the majority of his regiment in Oct. 1864.
Mitchell's brother, John P. Gum, was a Confederate, serving in Co. B, 5th Ky Vol. Inf., CSA. He was mortally wounded near Kennesaw Mtn, GA, on June 20, 1864, and died the same day. After the war Mitchell named his first born son after his slain brother, even though they had fought on opposite sides during the war.
