G-G-Uncle
Mitchell Gum enlisted in Co. A, 7th Ky Vol. Inf, USA, in June 1861. He served with the 7th at several battles in KY and in the entire Vicksburg Campaign of 1863. Shortly after Vicksburg was taken, he became seriously ill and was sent by hospital boat to St. Louis. He was later sent to the 7th Kentucky's Convalescent barracks in Louisville and mustered out with the majority of his regiment in Oct. 1864.
Mitchell's brother, John P. Gum, was a Confederate, serving in Co. B, 5th Ky Vol. Inf., CSA. He was mortally wounded near Kennesaw Mtn, GA, on June 20, 1864, and died the same day. After the war Mitchell named his first born son after his slain brother, even though they had fought on opposite sides during the war.

This was my paternal g-g-grandfather. He was very sick during the war (I have his military records) and at one time was considered AWOL but was later found to be in the hospital. He eventually got out and spent the rest of his life disabled due to a possible heatstroke during the war.

William Anderson Dozier (1816-1904) enlisted in the U. S. Army at Flat Lick, KY on 20 August 1861, and was mustered into service on 15 September 1861, at Camp Dick Robinson. He was assigned to Company I of the 7th and was elected Captain. He apparently was very popular with the men as they called him 'Captain Billy'. He served until wounded near Cumberland Gap on 30 August 1862. After stays in several Army Hospitals, Captain Billy resigned his commission on 2 March 1863, stating that his health problems prevented him from giving proper service.
