G-G-Grandfather
William Chaney was born in Breathitt County, KY, in 1844. He enlisted on Sept. 11, 1862. He served with the 5th Kentucky 'Sang Diggers' for the rest of the war - at Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, all the battle of the Atlanta Campaign, as well as the mounted engagements in Georgia and the Carolinas. He was wounded at the Battle of Atlanta on July 22, 1864. He was one of the last Soldiers of the Army of Tennessee to surrender, doing so in Atlanta on May 10, 1865. At the time his regiment surrendered on May 6, he was on a scouting mission near Raleigh, NC. He was paroled at Chattanooga, TN, on May 22, 1865, and allowed to return home to Breathitt County. His father and two brothers, including George who served with him in Co. B, were killed in the Breathitt County feuds. In 1909 he moved his family to Forest County, WI, near Crandon (my hometown). He died there on Dec. 28, 1928. He is buried at Lakeside Cemetery in Crandon, with a Confederate headstone, one of only a few in the entire state.

William, my 1C1R, enlisted in Co E, 5th Kentucky Infantry Regiment, CSA on 27 Sep 1862, in Gratz, Owen County, KY. Evidently, SGT Mefford was captured as a result of Grant's relentless campaign at Vicksburg on 04 Jul 1863 — the day after Lee's defeat at Gettysburg.* Since his trail doesn't surface until August 1870, when he was enumerated in the census. I'm still trying to find more information of his life and whereabouts.

Andrew became a prisoner during the Battle of Middle Creek but it is believed he, and all others taken at this time, were released within a couple of days. He rejoined his unit in September, 1862 near Salyersville for the final month of service in this 12 month unit. He later joined with Sid Cook's band of Guerrillas who later became affiliated with the 7th Battallion as Co. G. It was with this group on April 13, 1864 that Andrew was one of two Confederates killed in Paintsville, KY. His gravesite is unknown.
