Born 1788 in Manlius, New York, at age 74 walked out to pasture with cows and left his wife, 4 children the youngest 2 years old and traveled from Pennsylvania to Iowa and enlisted on September 19, 1862. Served at Rock Island as a guard and died from disease on February 4, 1864. He is buried in Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island, Ill.
