Albert enlisted in Company A of the 18th Iowa Volunteer Infantry on 12 July 1862, being paid a bounty of $25. He is listed as a farmer, 5'10' tall, 24 years old, with grey eyes and a fair complexion.

He died on 8 January 1863 of wounds received the same day in the Battle of Springfield, one of the few major military actions fought in Missouri during the Civil War. He is interred in Grave 245 of Section 9 of the Springfield Military Cemetery.

William C. Mapes died January 8,1863 defending Springfield, Missouri. He is buried at Springfield National Cemetery. His parents were Emanuel and Sarah Parker Mapes of Decatur County, Iowa. A soldier named Pike sent a letter to his parents, dated January 9, 1863 informing them of his death by being shot in the neck.

He was a Master Stair Builder, traveled across the country on special jobs. He had at least 3 patents to his name for tools to lay out circular stairs. He died Mar 5, 1890 in Hoboken, NJ of pneumonia.

I have my great, great grandfather's original discharge form from the civil war...He was wounded slightly in the battle of Springfield, Mo. He was discharged when the unit was mustered out on July 20, 1865. The document is in good shape and has all the original seals and signatures. I wrote to the National Archives and got his military history and pension forms. Lots of interesting information. He seemed to have spent his remaining days in Stillwater, Ok....He is buried in Fairlawn Cemetery in Stillwater(Blk 2, L 13, Sp#1), B-1842 d-1915...
