My grandfather;(1834-1914) He was drafted in 1864 and reported for duty at Davenport Iowa 5 Oct 1864. His draft was moved to Atlanta in Jan 1865 It was attached to the 17 corp on the right flank of Sherman's army The 16th partipated in the march to he sea the invasion of SC and the grand march in WDC. The regiment was mustered out at Louisville Kentucky 19 July 1865

Joshua M. Harlan - Private   
Joshua M. Harlan was a Private in Company K, 16th Infantry, Iowa Volunteers. He died of “Chronic Dysentery” on August 20, 1862 at the hospital cited above and was buried the following day . His present burial site is the National Cemetery at Corinth, Section A, Grave #121. He was the brother of Michael Thomas Harlan who also served in an Iowa infantry regiment during the war.

Joshua had recurring health problems during his entire time in the army. He enlisted on February 13, 1862. On April 1, 1862 he is listed as left in the hospital at Benton Barracks, St. Louis, MO. He rejoined his unit on June 23, 1862. At the time of his enlistment in Boonsboro, Iowa, Joshua was described as 5 feet 7 inches tall with gray eyes and black hair. His complexion was listed as dark. His occupation was given as farmer.
