Enlisted Co D, 15th Iowa Infantry Regiment on 22 Mar 1864 at Keokuk, Iowa. Discharged 24 Jul 1865 near Louisville, Ky. Suffered a facial wound in Battle of Atlanta on 22 Jul 1864 when the 15th Iowa was engaged along the Georgia Railroad tracks at Decatur. Went on with the 15th Iowa to Savannah and contracted 'Disease of Eyes' according to records of 15 Dec 1864. Applied for pension on 18 Nov 1889 (pension # 741196)and National Archives # 723859. George's widow, Louise Bollinger Trump applied for Widow's Pension (#960371) on 3 Feb 1911.

'Captain Hutchcraft: Company E., Fifteenth Infantry. James Nixon Roberts served in the Union Army during the Civil War. He enlisted October 10, 1861 as a 6th Corporal, and was promoted to 3rd Sargeant on July 4, 1863. He was wounded severely in the left thigh July 21, 1864 near Atlanta, Georgia. He died of the wound on September 6, 1864 at Rome, Georgia. He is buried in the National Cemetery at Marietta, Georgia., Section C, Grave 197 (Actually Grave # 1419) . Col. Hugh T. Reid'
