Ira Pfoutz - 1st Lieutenant   
Ira,at age 20, enlisted in Marshall Co., Iowa, 18 Sep 1861 for three years. Distinguished military service included service in the Departments of Missouri, Tennessee, and Cumberland and on the Mississippi River. Was at the capture of Island No. 10 and the Naval attack on Vicksburg 1862 as a member of the Mississippi Flotilla, in siege of Vicksburg in 1863, capture of Memphis and Fort Pillow, the Battle of Kenesaw Mountain, was seriously wounded in right thigh in Battle of Atlanta. Sent home to Montgomery Co., Ohio, and discharged 6 Nov 1863 by Officers Disability Board.

He then re-enlisted in Ohio, where he was born, as Captain, Co. 5, 81st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and served with same until mustered out of service on 25 Jul 1865 at Camp Dennison, near Cincinnati. Pfoutz pension file is voluminous. He died 15 Aug 1915 at Dayton, Ohio at the Veteran's Home.

From his obituary - 'On September 8, 1861, he enlisted in the Federal army and on September 30th left for Camp McClelland at Davenport, Iowa, where he remained for about two months. His company was then ordered to Benton Barracks, Missouri, and for nearly four years next succeeding he served his country, having been in numerous bloody battles during that time. He was wounded at Shiloh on April 6, 1862, and after two months in the Division hospital, was returned to his regiment then stationed at Corinth, Mississippi.'

Lewis Dyer Co. F. 11th Iowa was pretty old when he inlisted. He was born in New York about 1815. He is buried at Chaple Hill Cemetary in Scott County Iowa. His grave has a GAR marker. Family history says there is a drummer boy buried in that graveyard too but I don't know any more than that. He was my great great grandfather.
