John Caleb was my great,great,great grandfather.

Died during the Battle of Pittsburg Landing aka Battle of Shiloh in 1862

'Andrew' only arrived in the USA about a month before he was mustered out at Keokuk. Neither him nor his brother spoke much, if any English. It was important to the family that one should serve their new country. His older brother, my great grandfather, Andreas Harnagel took him to enlist and be mustered. I can only assume that their English was frustrating to the others. So he took Andrews' first name and shattered the last name pretty well, His birth name was Karl Harnagel. He was wounded at Vicksburg and died of his wounds at Memphis where he is buried.

My great grandfather. Born about 1832 in Illinois. Died 18 Oct 1863. Buried Memphis National Cemetary, Memphis TN. He left a young wife Elizabeth French Knapp and 3 children: Clara Belle b.14 Aug 1859, Joseph b 18 Aug, 1861 and Nellie b. 4 May 1863. I am still trying to find out the name and birthplace of Elijah's father.

Enlisting in Capt. Clark's Company (Company B, 30th Iowa Volunteer Infantry) of Drakesville, Iowa, he was appointed Second Lieutenant August 9, 1862 and mustered into service September 23, 1862. The 30th Iowa Infantry went to the front in October and was at the attack on Hayne's Bluff in the rear of Vicksburg, December 27 and 28, 1862. Also in the battle of Arkansas Post, January 11, 1863. Lt. Milliken was promoted to Full Major of the 30th Iowa over all the other line officers of the regiment for gallantry in battles, his commission dating April 19, 1863. Although promoted to Major, he was not mustered. This is understandable given his age at that time would have been 60. This was likely an honorary commission to Major in that (1) he was not mustered, (2) he remained assigned to Company B, which was still commanded by a Captain and (3) his gravestone in Raritan Cemetery, Raritan, Illinois depicts his rank as 2LT. The rank of Major was used as the basis of a pension granted to his wife, Priscilla, 2 Sep 1863. This, too, was often the case for widows of deceased officers who had been promoted even though not mustered. He was with the 30th Iowa on the memorable Vicksburg campaign which began on April 20, 1863. He was in the famous crossing of the Mississippi at Brumsburg and Hardtimes; at the Battles of Port Gibson, Edward's Ferry, Raymond, Clinton, and at the capture of Jackson, the capital of the State of Mississippi. He also took part in the battles of Champion Hills and Black Hills as the rebels were driven back into Vicksburg. James was mortally wounded at Vicksburg on May 22, 1863 while gallantly leading the 30th Iowa in the great charge. He died of his wounds on May 23, 1863 at Walnut Hills, Mississippi at age 60. He was loved and respected by his command, and his death was lamented by all who knew him.

William Harvey was my great, great grandfather. He was wounded, on Walnut Hill at the battle of Vicksburg on May 23, 1863. That summer on August 10, 1863 he was taken prisoner at Black River Bridge, Misssisipi while foraging. He was taken to Richmond on August 22 where he was imprisoned. On Febuary 27, 1864 he was transfered to Andersonville, Ga. where he remained until the end of the war. I am currently looking for a G.A.R. or Civil war picture of my great, great grandfather if anyone out there might have one. Thanks.

Born in Armagh, Ireland in 1825, Rogers emigrated to Bonapart, Iowa in 1846, where he was a stone mason. He joined the 30th Iowa Infantry on August 8th, 1862. During the Grand Assault on the Vicksburg fortifications on May 22, 1863, Sgt. Rogers was shot in the back by Alabama defenders. He died two days later of his wound, leaving a wife and two surviving children. He initially was buried in the Vicksburg City cemetery, but was later re-interned in the Vickburg National Cemetery

I have a reunion picture of the 30th Iowa Infantry that I will be happy to share. JD Bragg enlisted May 8, 1862 at Keokuk, Iowa under the command of Col Abbott. He was mustered out May 1865 in Washington, D.C. He is buried in Haynes Cemetery, Knox Co. IL. I recently received pension applications for J.D. Bragg. One form submitted by a previous officer in this unit states that J.D. Bragg contracted chronic diarrea and piles and suffered pain from the weight of the ammo boxes he carried. 'He was treated at a hospital that was on a boat that moved from place to place' outside Vicksburg on the Mississippi. After researching Hospital ships, I found the USS Red Rover, the only ship to function as a hospital ship at that place and time. Reading about the ship and seeing actual pictures was very enlightening. Perhaps others have ancestors who also were treated aboard the USS Red Rover. There is both history and pictures on line.

Enlisted as a Private on 12 August 1862 at the age of 20. Mustered in Company G, 30th Infantry Regiment Iowa on 14 September 1862. Promoted to 6th Corporal on 26 March 1863. Promoted to 2nd Corporal on 24 April 1863. Killed on 15 June 1864 at Kenesaw Mountain, GA. Buried at Marietta National Cemetery.

Died on February 17, 1863. He is buried at Section D, Site 2058 at Vicksburg National Military Park.

This man was my grand father's uncle. As such he wrote a letter to the veterans administration to support the granting of a pension to my grand mother. In the letter he mentioned he had served in the 30th Iowa

William Strabley was my great grandfather. He served in the 30th company K until late 1863. He was then transferred to the Invalid Corps which eventually was renamed the Veterans Reserve Corps. I believe he may have served at Camp Morton POW camp in Indianapolis.
