Josiah Harvey - Private
|
Josiah Harvey, my great grandfather, mustered into the 147th Indiana Volunteers Infantry regiment on March 8, 1865, in Indianapolis, Ind. At some point after being sent into action, he became ill with black measles, a severe strain of measles that often led to life-threatening illnesses, and dropped along a road of march, unable to continue. He was picked up by the rear guard, thrown into an ammo wagon and transported to a hospital, where he recovered. The only casualties of this late-in-the-war unit were due to disease. Josiah survived and lived to age 84. I am very glad those rear guardsmen picked him up along the road, else I would not be here to write these words.
