My new book 'The Boys From Lake County' is a history of Company A, 73rd Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment. It lists the name, age, height, complexion, color of hair and eyes, where born, where resided in Lake County and what happened to them during the Civil War for each of the original enlistees of Company A.
As a matter of course, the book is also a history of the formation, movements, and battles of the entire regiment.

Robert was my great-great-grandfather. He was born in Lowell, Indiana in 1831 and died in Indianapolis in 1863. I am still searching for the cause of his death since there was no battle anywhere in Indiana during the Civil War.

Albert enlisted on 8/3/1862, as First Sargent of Company E, 73rd Indiana Volunteer Regiment. He was promoted to Captain on 2/17/1863. He was severely wounded in the thigh at the Battle of Days Gap, AL on 4/30/1863 and taken prisoner. He was transported to Libby Prison in Richmond, VA and stayed there until 5/7/1864. He was then transported to Macon, GA where he spent time at Camp Oglethorpe (POW camp next to Andersonville, for officers). In October of 1864 he was transferred yet again to Camp Sorghum, SC and then to Camp Asylum, SC. He escaped from Camp Asylum on 2/13/1865 a day or two before Camp Asylum was liberated by General Sherman's forces. Albert drowned on 2/20/1865 while trying to cross the Catawba River near McCollouch's cotton factory. The factory was located close to Beckhamville, South Carolina, about 40 miles NNE of Columbia.

b:3-4-1840, Sulphur Springs, Henry Co., Indiana, d:5-27-1923 Los Angeles, California, buried at Newton, Kansas.enlisted at Plymouth, Ind., with Co. F 73, Ind. regiment, Aug 6, 1862, as a private. He fought in several engagements, principally at Stone River and Day's Gap, receiving at the latter place a wound that caused the amputation of his arm. As he lay suffering from loss of blood, two kind and loving women of the south ministered to his wants for days, carrying food to him in the woods, where he fell. He was in time taken prisoner to Libby prison and at Richmond was traded back to the union Army. He was mustered out of the service as a corporal on July 28, 1863, at Annapolis, Maryland.
