James Pruet was my great-grandfather. He was a Waggoner/Teamster in the 52nd Indiana Infantry, Company F. The 52nd Indiana was also known as the Railroad Regiment. *** Obituary, Laurel [IN] Review, November 3, 1909: Flowers have their time to wither and leaves their time to fall and man is subject to the same natural law. This time the grim monster has laid his icy fingers upon James Pruett [sic], son of William and Elizabeth Pruett [sic], who was born in Franklin County, Indiana, May 26, 1831 and departed this life at his home two miles north of Buena Vista, October 25, 1909, aged 78 years, 4 months and 29 days. Thus an aged, respected and worthy citizen has gone to his reward. When the war of the Rebellion broke out in 1861, he was among the first from this county to volunteer his services to his country, enlisted in Company F of the 52nd Indiana Regiment and remaining in his country's service 3 years and 11 months, distinguishing himself as a good soldier. After the war was over he returned to Franklin Co., where on the 7th day of January 1881, he was united in marriage to Jerusha Cassady. To this union were born three children, James, Bernie and Clem, all of whom survive him. He leaves a widow, three sons, two step-children, three sisters, four grand-children and a host of relatives and friends to mourn their loss. While he never identified himself with any church organization his belief was Methodism. The deceased was a kind, truthful, honest and accommodating citizen and neighbor. Let us hope that through divine grace he has received a home in that haven of rest. *** James and Jerusha are buried at Hopewell Cemetery, Rush Co, IN.

Alfred suffered chronic health problems due to his Civil War service, specifically catarrh of the respiratory passages and dyspepsia.

Alfred was very involved in both the G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic), a social and political organization made up of former Civil War veterans. In September 1891 he attended a reunion in Rushville of the 52nd Indiana while living in Manilla. Alfred was one of the 52 who attended out of the original 1,000 men in the regiment.10 He attended the G.A.R. encampment at Columbus, Indiana on May 18, 1898.
