Grandfather served with the 50th during the duration of the war. Upon the consolidation of the 50th into the 52nd Indiana, William was promoted to Corporal. He returned home after the war, settling near Freetown, Indiana in Jackson County. William suffered serious medical problems as a result of the war and did recieve a disability pension. He and his wife Huldah Sprague Scott were founding members of Gorbett's Chapel Baptist Church. Both are buried in the small cemetery near the church. William did not have a military monument until the 1990s when two of his great grand children petitioned for the monument which currently stands on his grave. Ironically the veteran services officer at the time did much to impede the placment of the marker (inspite of the fact we had in hand copies of all the pertinent documentation). The officer thought the war was 'long over and Long forgotten' and a waste of government funds and resources to place the marker. Of course Williams descendents feel otherwise and want the world to know our Grandfather was a true American deserving our honor.
