My great grandfather, William Gottlieb Koch, served in Company B of the 49th Indiana. He was born in 1845 in Trubbach, Gallen, Switzerland and moved to Davenport, Iowa after the war. He was married in 1868 and had 5 children. He was a pattern maker and was employed by John Deere,later set up his own shop. He died on 6-17-1921 and is buried in the old City Cemetery in Davenport. On his grave marker is 'Company B, 49th Indiana'. He was a member of the August Wentz Post #1 of the GAR in Davenport.

George Washington Hopewell biographical sketch from Wolfe’s 1909 History of Sullivan County, Indiana.
George W. Hopewell, who was a soldier in the Union cause at the time of the Civil War in this country, and who now resides in Gill Township, Sullivan County, Indiana, on land entered by his father at an early day, was born on the farm where he now resides March 9, 1843. His parents were John and Katherine (Lisman) Hopewell, both of whom were natives of Kentucky. The father came to Sullivan County and took advantage of cheap government land, the warrant for which was signed by President James Monroe. He continued to reside on this land until his death; in about 1849 (John H. Hopewell died March 25, 1850. John H. Hopewell’s father was John Hopewell b. 1751 and it was his land that John H. Hopewell (the son) inherited) His wife died there about 1876 ( Katherine Lisman Hopewell died October 12, 1876) He served his country as a soldier during the entire period of the war with Mexico. Mr.George Washington Hopewell served at the time of the Civil War as a member of Company G. One Hundred and Forty-ninth Indiana Regiment of Infantry, under Captain Parvin. He enlisted at New Lebanon, Indiana, served about eleven months and was honorably discharged at Indianapolis, Indiana, having been mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee. His service was mostly doing picket duty.
