Henry LEAMING, b. 25 Nov 1825, Philadelphia, PA; d. 23 Mar 1899, Romney, Tippecanoe, IN. Served the Union during the Civil War as Major and Lt. Col. of the 40th Regiment Indiana Infantry. Married (1) 20 May 1849 to Ellen JONES, d. 1854. Son of Furman Leaming and Hannah Ludlam of Philadelphia.
According to the regimental report, Leaming took command of the regiment after battle of Stones River (Murfreesboro, TN) when regt. commander Col John W. Blake was found drunk and placed under arrest by the brigade commander.
